I'm currently running a voucher/coupon site. Started work on it 3 months back. Over that time, I have added a good deal of original content, and done some heavy backlink building, blackhat style.

I have been taking care to keep the rate of link building consistent, with a steady rise and stable plateau - the links point to the sub-pages with relevant anchor text from high PR ******** sites.

A few days back, I began to rank very well, hitting the top spot in many cases for my sub page target keywords.

As of 11am today, most of the sub pages are struggling to reach page 10. :chairshot

I would suspect a penalty, but my home domain is still number 1 for its name, and variants of its name. I've had penalties before on other sites - in each case, the home domain was severely affected in the rankings.

I have not received a manual visit from any of Google's review centres.

Does anyone have an opinion as to what has happened - and whether I can expect a recovery if I maintain consistent link building?

I have a theory that the drop is part of google's automated test to see if the link building remains consistent.

Also, does anyone know if big G sandboxes individual sub pages? Some of them have gone down, some are still ranking!

Check to see if the sites you linked to lost there PR, if so that is the reason you got dropped from Google. Also your link might have been removed from those High PR sites. Just a thought.

Id just keep doing what your doing, Google has done a very strange algo change this month. There's a huge thread regarding it at WMW with many experiencing what you are describing.

Personally i wouldn't make any snap changes until the dust settles.

BTW were a lot of your backlinks from template areas like sidebars, footers etc rather than embedded in text content?

Google is trying to play mind games with webmaster, most probably they are testing a new algo, but who knows :)

Same thing with me, all my sites dropped ranking, however still holding their page rank(5) and are still indexed within Google. I have been doing alot of link building lately, and I think I'm being penalized for it. Similar thing happened to me last year, everything came back after a period of time.

Did your sites rankings return to normal since the last post? I just noticed the same thing on my site.

My site is now established with good rankings, generally on page 1 for competitive keywords. I have been doing intermittent, high quality linkbuilding.

Depending on how old your site is.
Rankings can change from time to time.
I find when rankings increase quickly they tend to fluctuate in rankings high and low.

I think what is happening is google are testing your page with top ranking positions,
Seeing if there is high bounce rate, how many pages visited on site, time period on site.

This is mainly for really competitive keywords that this will happen.

Otherwise it could just be a teething period.

Yeah that would be the Google Dance. The majority of my sites are in page #1 but when Google gets crazy and starts dancing most of them go to page #2 but after a few days they're back in page #1. So don't worry and don't look too spammy when building your links :D
