If your website was ranking well, and then dropped Ranking after updates, how do you know if your site was hit with a penalty or has just dropped because the backlinking on it was no longer diversified enough to still rank that highly?

The site was ranking well, but with only a few backlinks + EMD power. Im not sure if the links just need diversified more, or if the domain is shot.

check your bank link counts, if you saw major drop there , it could be the reason.

Its really hard to identify the actual reason behind the drop though.

Go to Google and file a reconsideration request and they'll message you back via the email you're using with your webmaster tools account letting you know if you was penalized.
