    Hello Everyone,

I have a site that for some reason no longer ranks for any search term that includes the city name. For example:

Chicago donuts = NOWHERE IN THE RANKS

donuts = #3 in the ranks

WTH? Has anyone else come across this? Is it a problem of overuse in the anchors?

Any help you an provide would be appreciated. Thank you and have a great day!

Seems to me pretty obvious that it's about excessive use of anchor text. You should go for more diversity. Long term anchor text and stuff like, link, click here, see this site works really good.

I would most likely agree with the over use of the location name. Make sure you are using similar long tail keywords such as "Best donuts in Chicago" and also build some links without anchor text. Then to make sure you show up in local searches be sure to submit yourself to as many local directories as possible and show your location on manta, facebook, findthecompany, all of those directories that will show google where you are. A google+ profile must be maintained (unfortunately) and you can input location and hours.

Actually seen this a lot. Over-optimization of location in the anchor text.

I've not experienced this, but it does cause me some alarm given that a significant part of my income comes from 'chicago donuts' type pages...!

Yep, this is no different than an over-optimization penalty. Time to clean up some of those links so that you can start ranking again for the city name.

In the future don't build links with city name + keyword over and over again, throw in some diversity.

Did you check to see if you were penalized in Webmaster tools? Since it is a partial penalty you should have a notice.

Not sure if what I am about to say is relevant with your case but I will leave it here just in case.

I recently had this problem but with a reverse effect. my client is selling a specific service all over the UK this the anchor text we were building were xxxx hire London, xxxx hire enfield etc. This resulted on a recent massive ranking drop on the short tail keyword xxxx hire, while the location rankings remained on the same page.

We managed to recover in a month by removing a location related anchor text which was accidentally pushed too much "xxxx hire croydon" instead of bringing down the % of the sort tail version which lost rankings "xxxx hire". Yesterday I got the ranking updates and its up by +146 positions. Job done :)
