Penalized 301'd site back in top 30 - anyone ever seen this?

    I'm baffled by this one.

Site A was #1, then penalized site-wide for unnatural links.

I 301'd it to site B (a fresh site with the content cloned from site A), which reached #1.

Last week, site B was penalized site-wide for unnatural links and vanished.

Now, Site A is ranking in the top 30 and the penalty has been changed to partial - even though it's still a 301 redirect pointing elsewhere.

Do I remove the redirect and try to re-rank Site A? Or just move on?

    Never seen this before. Thoughts?

Practically, the SITE 1 has moved 3 pages from #1 to page 3. It's still penalized and there's very little chance that it will get lifted (until and unless you remove all bad links).

    So, move on my friend....

Try the double 301 redirect method (site a > site b > site c). I did this to a penalized domain 8 months ago and its still ranking #1.

Google trying to play games with you. They have added a factor of random shit in their algo.

Are you sure the site is doing 301 correctly?

Sounds quite normal when play enough with 301's. Probably, and usually, you will not be able to rank it so move on.

Since how many days has the site been ranking? Let us know if the rank stays. I had once tried the 301 and it only ranked for a week and then disappeared from the serps unfortunately.

Hey OP, sorry to hear about your site. But yes I've seen G do some really strange things too. The 03/19/13 update killed a $200/day site of mine dead - site:mydomain.com returned zero results in G.

Then 05/03/13 I noticed a trickle of G traffic in piwik in this referrer format: ip-50-52-226-218.ip.secureserver.net/search/pagename.html. G was spidering/indexing/and ranking the dead site by it's reverse dns address (it was on goddady hosting). Site made it back to the $150/day mark and held on for over 3 months before another evil little animal took it out for good.

Did you tried back linking after your site was penalized at first instance on 03/19/13 ?

Why not de-index B, re-upload the content to A, and remove the redirect, and test results.

Either that or redirect A to another fresh domain.

It's been over a week now.

No, no details are missing. That's question is why I made the post - I don't understand it either.

Yeah, I've seen similar types of things, but recovery hasn't been to the same level as you saw.

Yes, I've now redirected both A and B to a fresh domain and will see what happens.
