I have had my computer for about 8 years. It's a Gateway 550R with Windows XP. I use a DSL modem.

Everytime I download Firefox, it slows down my pc so bad that I wonder is using FireFox worth it. It makes me wait about 1 minute before it finishes loading a site. Whenever I'm surfing, I have to wait another minute if I click to a different page on the same site. Heck, it even takes a minute to bring up the Big G search engine when I'm ready to do a regular search.

If I delete Firefox off my pc, my pc will be just as fast as when I first bought it.

I wonder is FF really neccessary for setting up some bh methods. Or do you guys think that I should just buy a newer PC?

Please let me know what you all think?

well, to really determine if it's the issue with firefox then I'd advise you to do this.

Run firefox and open the task manager and keep an eye on how much ram and cpu usage it's consuming. That way you'll know if it actually is firefox.

On the other hand, you can just boycott FF and start using opera (the new one if faster than chrome), or you can use chrome.

If you think your system resources are not being used very much and yet your PC is slow, then I'd recommend you get a new one.

It has to be FF because as soon as I download it, my pc slows down to a crawl. As soon as I delete it, my pc returns to normal.

I have tried deleting other downloads and there were no changes at all. MyPC only slows down when I download FF.

Thanks for your advice. I may try opera.

It might not "be" firefox, it might be something "using" firefox.
You may have a virus that's injecting itself into firefox.

The virus(if injecting into FF) will only execute itself when firefox is being ran.

this sounds like a good possibility of what it might be. i looked at the specs of your machine and its more than enough to be able to run firefox properly. it could be some kind of addon that you installed to that's making your browser go to shit to.

try clicking on help and clicking on restart with add-ons disabled. if that doesn't work, you probably have some kind of malware like zero-day mentioned. back in the day, i installed some shit that would pull up fake google results that lead to ads whenever i put certain keywords. had a hell of a time getting rid of it.

Try using Chrome. As far as I know, it doesn't use plugins like FF does.

At one point on my old Desktop, it had a quad core processor and 8 gigs of RAM, brand new fresh copy of windows(legit) nothing 'additional' installed. Just a fresh copy of windows downloaded FF and ran it, FF was virtually at a crawl. So I said screw it and downloaded Chrome, haven't went back to FF since.

Having FF isn't a necessity for IM.
Sure it helps in some cases, but all throughout my "IM Life" I never used one plugin for FF except for FireBug.

the last week (since i updated) firefox freezes and the bar up the top says (not responding)! it is driving me mad. it happens every few minutes!!! then it takes a minute to unfreeze.

also, i don't know if this is relevant, but something in the computer gets louder. something from inside of it (i don't know what part it is).

is this happening to anyone else??

    can i downgrade it??

till last week, when I was on version 6, firefox crashes unexpectedly when I open some pages. i have now upgraded to version 7.01 and the crashing is very low now.. crashes occasionally, but not like it was in version 6.

i am using a 7 year old PC having AMD Sempron 2400+ (1.67 GHz) and DDR1 1.43 GB of RAM in the office. Means, FF runs smoothly here.. it must be some other problem in your PC.
