Question: It is worth building up a PBN of decent sites or just buy a domain, slap up any old spun crap x 5 with an anchor text? The guys I see winning seem to be following the churn and burn technique.

Description: So i'm currently building a PBN and i'm taking my time, finding decent domains with a clean past (what is up with Japan buying up expired English domains and spamming them with crap??). Anyway i'm basically creating a new money site when I make a PBN, I make sure it's got traffic, ranking well and has active social media, a few new links and scheduled content. It also looks awesome.

During my searches i've actually found like some many people's PBN's by accident and as a result, their money sites and some of these are actually doing really well. Anyway, the one's I see doing really well are the guys that seem to just buy a domain, slap up a unique WP theme, spam 4 x spun content with the same anchor text, rinse and repeat.

Whilst I am easily spending $200 per site a year, these guys are probably going on $25 - 50 each so i'm kinda wondering why i'm bothering with all this effort.

I can build 10 PBN's for around 480$ in total, includes content(one homepage 1000 words, 5 smaller articles(300-600)), hosting, registar, logo, social media profiles. They have around 40-60 RD on average with wiki, huffp, bbc, nbc etc links.

these are all set up properly without spun crap and will last for a few years (usually)

You don't need to be spending big money on domains at all.

That sounds like pretty good PBN domains. Do you buy them from people or find them yourself?

Find them all myself, not really much to it.

You can find some decent ones on expireddomains.net

OP
I am kinda wondering as well why some people rank with shitty PBNs and mine which are way better prepared are not that successful
is that some random factor or matter of time that does not allow me to outrank my competitors

OP, as everything in IM, even this is all about ROI. These guys who set up just a default WP theme and put on some spun content know what they are doing. They are very well aware, that eventually, their network will get hit, but by then, they will have good enough ROI to not bother about making their PBN look real. However, don't confuse this with PBN links outsourced from various sellers, because that's something a bit different. If you are building PBN for your long term projects, then make it look at least somehow realy, don't use default theme, don't use spun content, add some sidebar etc. Nothing big. I honestly believe that you are overkilling it a bit with your PBN domains to be honest, but again, if it brings good ROI, then it doesn't matter. @MikeyMikey13 is a killer and he knows what he is doing. You will find the best way how to approach this eventually as well. It's about finding a blueprint for whatever project you are launching.

Fact that your PBN looks better than PBN of someone else has almost zero impact on ranking. They can use better domains, even though they look like crap. Not to mention, that you keyword research may not be the best, so you are going for some brutal keywords for example. There is a lot of variables.

I mean, that if you are going after "how to lose weight", then you won't rank.

I meant "won't" not "want". I should have a breakfast.

just because their link profile is too good to leap?

Basically yes + shittons of competitors with much bigger budget than yours. You can't expect to rank some keywords with just a few PBN links. Just don't share you keywords here. :)

OP, actually, each strategy has its own ups and downs and you have to decide which one is right for you.

For instance, in order to rank for X, you either need 10 decent scraped domains (quantity) or, 1 very high quality pre-release or backordered domain (quality)
