PBN of just Tumblr blogs?

I was talking to a buddy, and we were wondering whether a PBN could survive just on Tumblr blogs alone.

If so, wouldn't that be a better alternative to spending hundreds or thousands on domains? Or is it that the PA would be better with domains and therefore may be a better option or at least used in conjunction?

    Thanks for your input.

Well, yeah, you technically could. But that would be a rather large footprint. Also, there's the risk that Tumblr could delete the blogs.

Mix them up with other web 2.0 platforms and that'll be a good start. Make sure you boost them up with decent quality T2 links, social signals, and spam t3/4 or else they aren't going to be of much use.

Are there any other web 2.0 platforms that allow for registered expired names? For example, Domain Hunter Gatherer has an option to find other web2.0 properties besides Tumblr, but I tried to register wordpress, blogger, and some other one, and it didn't work.

    Thanks again for your advice.

There are a couple which allow reregistration. But the only ones worth chasing are Tumblr and Overblog. Rest isn't really worth the resources. I've tried them all and that is my conclusion.

For what it's worth, I've never seen a site ranking in a high competition niche using only / mostly Web 2.0 links. I've seen plenty ranking by spending hundreds / thousands on domains and building a strong PBN.

I would advise you to have both.

    Hey,
Yeah, it could be a PBN with just tumblr blogs alone - add more quality contents on regular basis and try increasing its PA so it can be a good PBN.
Make sure, it wont leave any footprints and mix them up with other web 2.0s as @JamaicanMoose said.
    Thanks

Same here. A Web 2.0 focused PBN sounds good in theory, but on the practical side Web 2.0s can only provide so much value. For competitive niches, a site will need backlinks from a variety of root-level domains.
