Could someone please explain how PBN backlinks which are hidden from google help to rank sites. I thought google needed to index backlinks in order to rank sites? If they are hidden, how does google use them?
    Thanks.

They are not hidden from Google but rather majestic, ahref bots are blocked from crawling these links so you cannot see them using third party tools.

they use robots.txt or .htaccess to block ahrefs/majestic robot, except google bot...
simple purpose, just to hide backlink from competitor...

Yea htaccess and denying by user agent and/or IP I guess is the best way.

I know a lot of ppl block ahrefs and other crawlers so that their networks can't easily be found.

Also some ppl more recently have started to block everyone except search engines from even seeing the backlinks on the pbn - that way better to stop people finding the sites that are using the pbn.

That the new way forward becouse people keep flagging in jealous competitors

I think this will allow bots only
    Overs traffic get chucked away....

    SetEnvIfNoCase User-Agent .*google.* search_robot
    SetEnvIfNoCase User-Agent .*yahoo.* search_robot
    SetEnvIfNoCase User-Agent .*bot.* search_robot
    SetEnvIfNoCase User-Agent .*ask.* search_robot

    Order Deny,Allow
    Deny from All
    Allow from env=search_robot

There are two ways you can go at it, with and without blocking crawlers (Majestic, etc.). Some think its best to not block as it looks more genuine, some do because they think its safest. Both ways you can go at it.

try to modify .htaccess file to prevent bots from crawling your website instead of robots.txt if you don't want to leave any footprint
