I have no idea where to put this thread, so I'll just drop it here. :)

Why I just want to say/rant about this, well:
    • I had a discussion with few (not one) first time clients about PayPal and payments as well as they wanted to send as friends and family (as they obviously did earlier from some reason to someone else).
    • There has been a case where I've been asked for to send payment as friends and family to a complete stranger again while making a purchase. Of course I didn't.
    • And I think that there was a thread or two recently where guys were scammed and they sent funds as friends and family of course.
So for all the newbies out there. Do not send payments as gifts/friends and family to no one that is not, well obviously your friend and/or family.

If you run onto a seller who is ASKING you to send payment as friends and family and he is looking to save couple of cents on a fee, there is something fishy going on I can assure you that. Same seller needs to reconsider his business model and/or raise price for goods/service a buck or two if needed to cover the fees. So stay away, there is something fishy going on.

When you are sending funds as friends and family you do not benefit from that at all. Person who receives funds benefits from it by saving couple of $ for a fee and you do lose your protection and right to dispute in case something goes wrong.

TL;DR: Just don't send funds when you are buying digital goods via PayPal as friends and family to complete strangers.

Yup, I know, that's true. But yet, there are guys who are complete newbies and have no idea that some sweet talking stranger with candy in his hand, explaining how they are going to screw PayPal (?!) is about to do. We've all been burned one way or another I just had idea to well at least prevent this a bit to all 4 guys who are going to read my post. :D

But still as noob you can atleast understand sending money as gift is not a good idea. If anyone is not sure about it he can always search in Google. When i was completely new i did search on google about how paypal works etc.

True indeed. When I was selling sites like 7-8 or so years ago and realized that I can save $30-40 on fees on single transaction while sending funds from US PayPal to my friends PayPal who had PayPal card (for profit withdrawal) that was fun thing to find out at a time. :) BUT I was straight away thinking how would I explain and prove that we are friends if PayPal asks. :) Of course that is completely different situation.

Well, thank you :) That makes two of us :D

I always offer two prices if I take payments via paypal.

    Normal price for friends/family.
Then A second price (normal price + 5%), where they can send it as paying for goods and services.

I have an add to this.
I believe the seller asks this because it is not possible to get a paypal refund (escalate an issue) when you send payment as a friend or family member. Because, why would you when you gift money?
They probably don't care about a buck or two here but about the whole amount.

Unfortunately crypto sellers on Reddit and elsewhere only accept paypal gifts, as the crypto is irreversable they also want irreversable from paypal.

There's another thing you guys need to know. If a seller asks you to verify receiving via email on paypal before beginning work you put yourself at risk. I had one instance where the person told me I had to do it before he'd begin work. I listened. Then he scammed and disappeared. It was very difficult to contest with paypal. It changes the service from "Not received from seller" to "Product was not as described". However accepting that email states it arrived and you signed off on it's quality. So a dispute will likely go towards the seller in a "Product was not as described" claim. I had to manually call in to Paypal, and talk to their resolution department, explain the claim was "Non receival" not "Not as I expected". It actually has to reboot the 10 days, and the whole claim restarts. But because the seller couldn't show the work he did (cause he disappeared) I won and received my money back.

Sending money as gift it’s not a good idea, especially on the internet. People get scammed every day for such things and you should be more careful. PayPal has unique ways of working and before you make anything stupid, search and consult with somebody.
Digital Ocean has worked great for me in the past couple of years. They have an amazing customer support, but everything great comes with a price. Try to talk with your admin to set up your skills.
