I was watching the news and heard this story:

A 15 year old boy has a brilliant IM idea. (didn't specify what the idea was :()
He manages to gross over $25,000 USD. He has it sent (in 5,000 portions) to his house via check. He saves the checks up until he has all five of them. His parents find the checks and freak out. They go cash them and put them into their joint bank account. They dump the kid to live with his grand parents. They claim that since the kids was their "property" then whatever he owns or owned rather is also their "property". The son is currently suing his parents with the help of his grandparents.

    Extra information:

His real mother is dead and his father lives with his stepmother.
The first court case sided with the parents! They grandparents appealed.

What kind of world are we living in? Were children are considered property?
This is the cruelest thing I've ever heard of. The icing on the cake? According to the news the kid was planning on using the money to make more so he could buy his family a nicer house. :(

Stupid parents... you got a brilliant kid here who's probably making way more than his parents does... and they're dumping him over a small period? Lol dumb...why not wait until he got like 100 cheques of 5,000 and steals his idea before even dumping him.

But seriously... that 25k is probably going to get wasted by the parents instead of being reinvested and scaling up whatever the operations he have and branching out into new bigger & larger ventures...

His parents don't deserve to live in a nicer house. They deserve to live in a cardboard box in northern alaska where it's -70 F and a blizzard.

That was painful for me to even read. The great thing about it is that he's gonna have millions he woulda shared with them, but instead he's gonna live it up while he's parents sold him for $25,000.

But well to be honest: If you had a 15 year old kid and it would make 25k$, would you leave it to him ?
It might depend but most kids in this age are not able to use this money correctly.
Even most adults are too stupid !

I'd leave him money and take most of it on a bank account for his future, because 25k now don't have to mean he sees 25k once again in future through IM.
But they mean a lot if he wants to buy a flat some day.
I'm sure he'd agree on it.

But as they took it for themself, that's just plain stupid.

I disagree if he is smart enough to make 25k with no start up money. Then he could do better with 25k in start up money

its their loss. if i were him I would never speak to them again. he should let them rot in their poverty while he gets rich. where did the story come from? maybe this kid would like to join bhw.

While I do not agree with it...

Believe it or not the law is on the parents side.

... Technically your parents own the rights to your earnings up until your 18 years old in the united states... (I have a book on family law)

[I live in the US :: Law varies by location]

And then they wonder why kids want to "off" their parents.

BTW... If he has the check stubs, he could provide it that it was in HIS name. They can't deny it from him then.

And did HE sign the back???? If not, BANG, check fraud by the parents right there. I'd give the stepmom a nice hard kick in the ass cause I'm sure she had something to do with it.

    agree, poor kid

must be even more terrible to get ripped off by your parents then for example some friends or whatever

anyway, i woulnt worry about the kid. If he made this money at the age of 15 then he will do it again

    Bah! Forget about them...

They're clearly losers, I mean taking his money is one thing, but dumping him after, that's harsh. If they are desperate enough to do that, I doubt he's going to gain much from suing. He's clearly the brains, I think he should just forget about them and move on. Live and learn.

I will add though, a lot of hate here for the parents. I actually pity them. I mean, if they are so poor and desperate to make a move like that. Of course, it is greedy and selfish and the whole "property" mentality is just wrong, but at the same time, I think it's pretty sad.

Thing is this may put the kid of trying, as losing something you worked that hard for can just kill your spirit to work

    Poor kid.

Thats terrible I feel so sorry for the kid.
If he can make that much money at this age though I imagine he will do just fine later on. His parents will come grovelling back to him after the cash they stole from him is long gone and he can then laugh in their face.

I'm 16 and my parents are cool with all the online stuff. They still say i should get a regular job, but i had a 2k check in the mail one month and that cleared it up. I get to keep whatever i earn, they don't try and hold me to limits or anything. I feel sorry for the kid, but at least he has his method down and who's to say he can't make just as much again? If he was smart enough, he could have called the company and had the checks canceled and reissued.
