My parents have asked me to do SEO for their site, I think it'll give me some good experience with SEO but I'm kind of lost.

The niche is VOIP phone systems.

I've already edited their website for header/title/description tags, and I guess what I have to do now is find long tail keywords and incorporate those into the content of the website. Then get backlinks.

Are there any tools that will give me a report to show them before/after?

I need to do this whitehat, I can't risk getting their site deindexed.

How can I get whitehat backlinks? All the services on here seem like blackhat methods making dozens of blogs and spamming thousands of comments.

And in general, what tools do whitehats use for SEO? I searched and found a couple like SEO Monkey, but what else is there?

Well the domain has been registered for 10+ years, the actual website layout is relatively new at 1-2 years.

Thanks for the links I'll check 'em out.

Because if its your parent business, and they rely on that, the good thing will be not to fuck it up by using/testing methods.

But if u think u can do it, which most us think we can. Than Don't do it.

You should really re-consider this unless you plan on REALLY learning local SEO. I can see by your questions you are thinking of IM SEO.

Generallyyou do not build backlink to a local site. Not in the way you do an IM site anyway.

Google has a local raking algorithm that will apply if you site SEO is done a specific way. The core of this method is citations, business associations online (and Google+ lately).

These things must be done carefully, and consistency in the citations is critical.

The tool you need for now is a subscription to Bright Local .com. (If you subscribe and do not mind, I have an affiliate link for you to use.)

They have the tools to monitor and track most of your efforts, especially the citations and keyword ranking.

Pm me and I will help you along. Your parents should be aware that it takes time to rank, and if you do it wrong you can tank the site.

Will only using citations help with the organic listings above and below Google Places listings?

No, not really. I've seen "mixed profile" sites manage to rank both organic and local, but they are spammy and scammy and do not last long. I think the "right way" is to have two sites; one the straight-up white hat local site for local rankings and the other the organic site that you can take some risks with.

Should you do it? Yes, of course.
Start with the simple things. You have correctly fixed their tags, now start doing some social backlinking.
Create a Facebook fan page, Twitter, YouTube channel, and LinkedIn. Start doing some promotion in FB/Twitter, get your parents to do a promotional video on YouTube.
Most importantly, create a Google+ account.

After that, list your site in Google Maps, it will help. Create a nice and complete profile, complete with correct map information, correct address/phone number and other information.

In your own site, create some nice articles, with your keywords of course. Put some thought on it, have videos/graphics/infographics in it.
Share those article on your site's social profiles, and share them also on your own personal social profiles.

I think the steps above could be great benefit for a start of a local site.

If it's local SEO you can start SMM. Start on facebook, twitter, pinterest. Social media marketing is the safest you can do for your site if you are still in the process of learning SEO

Def. recommend thinking twice before committing to this if your parents need to make money from it. If they aren't relying on making money from it, could be a good way for you to learn. My best advice is don't spend money on anything for two weeks. Read as much as you can about local SEO from respected blogs and the links people posted above. Do AS MUCH AS YOU CAN manually/without spending money. You won't see results, but you'll have a better understanding of how this all works. Then once you get it, you'll have a better idea of which tools are worth spending money on and which are a waste of time.

    Focus on Local Search.

Make sure your parents business is registered on Yelp, authenticate it, do the same on Google+ Business Pages. Use Google Map Maker to correct positioning and contact information. MAKE SURE the address, phone number, and contact information are in the footer of their website. Make sure that Google and Yelp have your parents business URL listed. Ask friends to write reviews on Google. Take a smart phone, enable GPS location for photos and take a picture of the front of the business. Post this to the Google+ Business Page with that geo location information on the photo. Make sure Google Webmaster Tools is hooked into the site, enable analytics, tie social media accounts together by linking to it. It's probably hard to be an enthusiast about your parents business, so the basics will help little by little. After all this is covered, look into more information on improving the local search results.

Beyond this, you can ask for link exchanges, maybe find a local real estate agent that is an active blogger, ask them if they'd be willing to write about the business, offer to do something in exchange, network, mingle, share ideas, connect with others, etc.

You can get in front of a lot of people with local search when done properly. Think creatively, don't be spammy, give good information to the end user, etc. If you want to try PPC, you need to target the correct people.

If none of this works out in the long run; word of advice... Grab a pen and paper and try cold calling, knock on doors, massage leads/current/past client databases. The go getter's make things happen, sometimes warming up a lead requires old school tactics. You may not close a deal in the first or second call but you'll never know what will happen when you accidentally run into a potential lead that remembers you from a few months back. They may need your help.

Like what most said, don't use your parents site as an SEO test. If you haven't done this before its hardly going to run smoothly the first time.

What's the agreement? Are you ready to be held responsible for any trial and error? Also, are they ready to part with funds? Now that you are done with the on site SEO, you next target is buying aged domains with PR and convert to backlinks. There are lots of tutorials out there to help you through.

I rank for local and organic in the same result, and am not spammy.

Standard SEO methods work, plain and simple, the strength of the site connected with the G+ Places account is the main factor in ranking (for my niche at least), as the top two local listings are from a huge chain site that has two business in the city I work in, and is the only influencing factor for them ranking.

Reviews don't mean shit, sites with 6+ reviews are way below me in the local listings (they are also closer to the city centre, so that isn't a direct influencer either), and the top two sites have 0 reviews.

Also the top 2 sites are from a DA=56, with site:mad:domain.co.uk giving 22,000 results, I have been 3rd for 6 months now, still trying to break through.

The No1 Tip, is to find sites with real local link history (Long term local blogs, review sites, Resource pages) and try to get genuine Brand Mentions (with link) on their pages, while creating loads of pages to your site, and try to make them really locally relevant.

Which sites rank first in local listings? Brands.
Brand Association with the area and niche = Rankings.
