That's fine to say that... but has anyone had any luck actually coming back to where they were? I have the same issue, lost over 10 monthly paying clients, they already waited 2 months then cancelled :)

    Cool, Do one thing.

Remove their links on Forums, Blog postings that you have done. Post fresh unique content on google blogger to regenerate their rankings.

Installing a script so ppl have to stay on the site? For local business this kind of behavior will just make u loose every bit of cred u ever had in the industry and may even get you a thump in the head on the street. If you are talking about some cheap porn site diff story, but not for a local brick n mortar business.

Simple Yet very Effective way to come out of it is to build Quality Links..

    Method that worked for me..

    1. Create atleast 5 Unique Original Article (Informative!!)
    2. Spin the article with atleast 80% uniqueness.
    3. Using senukex create web 2.0 properties! (Select only related categories.. this is important!!)
    4. Now Run it 3 times with 3 spun article. Include images also and anchor diversion (goto google keyword tool and generate lots of keywords there...)
############# You shud not use Your Actual Anchor Text Here!! Only LSI Keywords!! ############
    5. Now Get a Good wiki List. Blast the web 2.0 with them. Use the other two articles here..
    ##### You should never use u=your exact anchor text in any of web 2.0 properties or wiki blasting!! only LSI!!

Now u have made web 2.0 and blasted with wiki... Now Ping all web 2.0 with bulkping.com or pingfarm.. and submit all wikis to linklicious.. If possible add bookmarks to web 2.0..

Run whole camp for 10 days!! not one or two days! rinse and repeat! you will rank high! You can mix many more stuffs here! This worked for me so i thought to share it with u... :)

This is insane advice. This is like saying, "To get out of a traffic ticket just hit the cop with your car, duh."

Don't lie to clients about google dance and don't promise to get the rankings back fast. It is possible that they will try to get a second opinion, and if someother SEO company explains to them that panda hit their site because of your backlinks you'll be exposed as a liar.

    DonĀ“t lie to clients,

When I started SEO for others than me, I also registered some domains (not for my use) and some blogspots (and other webs 2.0) to make them rank, not only to pass link juice just in case my clients site drops but he will still have traffic from the webs 2.0

If the site dropped I would use the registered domains to rank them and redirect or just move the site to those domains and explain them about google.

noneone never complain because traffic was always steady and up, blogs and other satellite sites i made bring enough traffic to balance google dances.

    just my 2 cents

Been there. Don't lie, be honest. Send the affected clients a few links to blogposts talking about the updates. I'd choose posts like "omg, google update, 250 people died, all hope is lost".
Tell them it is indeed serious and that you'll do your best to get them up again, but that it will take time and of course that you will not bill them until they are back to where they were. It's frustrating, I know, maybe you will lose a few clients, but some will stick.

    IM all the way.
I hate it when client websites dip down... it sucks :p

The easiest thing to do would be to blame Google and just tell them its all technical reasons, yadedadeda. I have done much dirtier things in these cases... lets not discuss them though :p we must all make a living, hey? But let me give you some advice...

Monthly Clients are LUCRATIVE, but STRESSFUL.

Its up to you what you decide to do, but I've realised that monthly clients are really tough on my health and well-being, LOL :p ;) the reason? Their website is in your hands. It doesn't matter if its not your fault and their website got slapped for a discretion in the past... you pay. And if its your fault, that is even worse.

That is why one-off clients are fantastic. Especially in the form of onsite SEO. If you offer onsite SEO packages, and maybe offer to give them some one-off links and charge them several hundred dollars... more power to you, frankly. You don't have to make huge promises of ranks; and it means that while you only get one-off chunks its much safer. To make up for the lower monetary value to you, you have to work on mass numbers; more small businesses are willing to pay $499-799 once off than they are to pay hundreds per month.

Its a model I am looking at seriously developing; its very lucrative and a great use of time. It is FULL-PROOF against updates. In fact I'm going to make a thread about this.

This is right on the money, just focus on a handful of high PR blog and article sites with unique content, do not use spun crap straight to the money site, use the spun sites to point to the high PR blog and article sites with unique content.

While it doesn't help you now, just remember in the future to prepare your clients for something like this. Business owners generally respect honesty.

Tell them that Google algorithm are one of the main reasons to hire an SEO--they will look into the matter for you and adjust your site accordingly.

Always spin the negative into the positive and clients will usually bite.

Thanks for sharing that.. I'm curious, are you saying not to include any of the anchors you are targeting in any of the above methods then? Not in wiki, not in web 2.0 not in social.. also not in articles? I'm having the same issue, all my sites have tanked so im keen to hear ppls strategies.
