i don't use them on my sites as i find them annoying, pop up blockers along with ad blockers are making it increasingly difficult now for site owners to earn now

Spammy IM'rs and Retarded Ad networks are the reason why adblockers are being used so often now. People load up way too many ads, and slow pages down so people have to use an adblock to load page well. And some networks like Clicksor don't really give a fuck and they been allowing malware ads for about 10 years now.

yes i agree, i have been on sites when researching and bam a popup, close it scroll down and another bloody popup, then my screen flashes and they've loaded a popunder, so i installed adblockers to stop it.
I don't use adverts on my sites now due to just about everyone getting adblockers, even facebook announced they were fighting them.
Website owners will have to stop being lazy now and find more creative ways of making money from their sites

On Mobile, I have been to some pretty major news sites and they have had the fake virus popup ads.

This isn't really fresh news. Heard about it a long time ago. What I'm interested in is how Google is going to detect annoying ad popups and separate them from e.g. login popups, image lightboxes and similar useful elements.

What if I advert my own business ? Is it still considered as an Ad by google or AdBlockers ?

If that is the case, that pages with popups will lose rank, then the NYT, Washington Post, Shape, Cosmo, in fact every huge site on the internet is fucked.

Popups are dead guys. Next will be opt-ins to create a list, or any site mentioning the word "subscribe", you heard it here first.

If only there was a way to make popups less "intrusive".....

For years I have heard that this or that is going to kill rankings, then you look at the top sites and they do all these supposed "bad" things.

I think this is all a mental game. Google knows that people build their sites to what they think Google likes, so if Google leaks some info that pop-ups are bad, half of the people out there will take them off their sites. Plus on forums like this, it will get repeated that pop ups hurt your rankings etc. Then right there Google has reduced pop ups by half and they never really did anything.

For a long time, I never bothered with Adblockers as most of the sites I went to were reasonable. However, about a year ago when I joined a popular Mercedes forum, the pages loaded so slowly due to the vast number of in-content and sidebar ads that the only way I could browse the site was with an Adblocker.

You're right about that. So many blogs ask for your email (dumb idea) and then sell it to advertisers. Hopefully Google punishes sites that use that tactic. I'm expecting them to punish smaller content image based sites soon. So many people just create sites that just aggregate reddit.

They are not the biggest sites for nothing, they'll find a way round it
