Is a site with a lot of text on the main page good for SEO top exposure?

Not necessarily.

If you are trying to rank it, it should match the intent or it will have a hard time ranking.

For example, you will have a hard time ranking 10k words page for a recipe keyword.

What matters is not the amount of the text but its quality. Key points:
- The text should contain relevant keywords but shouldn't be spammy.
- The text should be attractive to readers. Usually readers don't like long texts. Nobody reads them.
- The structure of the text also matters a lot. Keyword-rich headings, numbered / bulleted lists and short paragraphs are a must and contribute a lot to your Google ranking.

Also, the main page is not the ONLY page that attracts visitors to your site. Packing other pages with relevant keywords and high-quality text content is just as important!

The optimal word count is 600 to 700 for SEO, and less than 300 are considered as thin content.
I suggest you consider the key factors for developing the content for your site rather than considering the count of words.
