    Hi Fellow BHW's,

I have a few clients I do SEO for and the majority of them I can rank within 2-3 months and get them to spot #1-5 on page 1.

Now this applies for long tail keywords as well as local keywords. The usual link pyramid and blog network post will get the thing up to page 1 FAST and keep it there.

HOWEVER, with highly competitive keywords and national keywords, ie "web design" I literally tear my hair out trying to get the thing to stabilize and sustain long term rankings. Regardless of what I do it seems that these keywords refuse to move past spot #10 or so. I mean i try everything! Guest posts, blog posts, fresh content, etc.

So guys, how do you tackle these highly competaive keywords? I was thinking adding more high pr guest posts and blog network backlinks as well as increasing the anchor text ratio and focusing more towards the money keyword. Your thoughts?

Nothing beats high PR network posts. If you are trying to rank for a high competition keyword then I think 100 or so is more than enough to push them to top 5. If you have tried that but failed (which I doubt unless your trying to rank against google) then take a look at what back links the top 3 have and copy it but do it more than them.

Also, focus on Social Media + Mobile, in addition to everything you're already doing, and the other things suggested here (high pr, ect)
Google has shifted since the last 2 updates, and they're heading more onto social and mobile.
So continue to do what's already working, but by all means, do not neglect social and mobile.
*By "mobile", I mean, start by making sure the website has a mobile version or is mobile optimized. And do some SEO on the mobile version as well.
    my 2 cents!

I agree with someone above who mentioned high PR networks. That is the way to break into the top 5 for highly competitive keywords.

But...and big but, they are risky. So make sure you pick and choose quality networks, and even still, there are no guarantees the network will not be detected.

Best bet is to become detective and find out what the first 3 sites are doing like abdullah says.
