I have a little problem. I have a site that is on the first page of g for a keyword that has roughly 30k searches on "exact match" according to google keyword tool. I have an average position of about 5. Prob is very little traffic. My logic was that with that many searches you are talking about an average of 1k searches a day so maybe 150-200 clicks a day? Is this realistic or not?

the 30k is for local monthly searches NOT global.

All opinions are welcome.

signup to google webmaster central and you will get the answer.

btw my site is #1 rank on Google with my primary keyword and 35million competition. i got 100-250 visitors from google. that's it.

Im in the same position as the poster above but get about 5200 a day. so its different for all

maybe the search queries come in bulk so maybe one day you may get a few hundred and next day very little? i guess the distribution is not uniform.

You'll never get the full estimated searches from google's tool.

You can estimate about 40% on average if you are #1. After that, if you are past the fold, you are going to notice a huge drop off for most queries.

I would suggest you to Check the search trends. Is that a seasonal keyword?

Also, you should check the other websites ranking for that keyword. Sometimes even if a BRAND website (say Amazon, ebay) ranks below you (#6 - #8) , they are likely to get more clicks than your site.

It's a good idea to sign up for Google Webmaster tools. Also, sometimes G analytics is not very accurate.

So you can check them step by step.

Hope that helps you.

The keyword is not seasonal. Though cnn is right beside me so i got some major competition there.

I think google's keyword tool can be misleading, I had a similiar thing I got a website ranked number 3 that apparently had about 30k searches a month (exact), I ended up getting like one or 2 visits a week!

I did think the stats looked a little odd for the keyword when I started the project. I think sometimes Google's tool sometimes fills in the search volume with that of another very similar synomous keyword when it doesn't have the exact stats. You should check the 'advertiser competiton' bar next to your keyword, if it's very low compared to other keywords in the same niche, that might be an indicator of low actual search volume because you would normally expect keywords with high search volume to have more advertisers.

Testing with PPC is the best way to go for this. That way you'll know for sure whether or not the keyword is worth going for... You can always try an adwords voucher if you don't want to use your own funds.

this is a top keyword this isn't some obscure term, that is what really gets me. I guess the ppc route might be a good idea.

I have a client that ranks #3 for a keyword that G says has 550,000 monthly uniques (for the summer). Based on that I'm geting a 9% CTR right now, but when I get tested on position #2 and #1 the CTR jumps dramatically (about 27% - 32% for #2, 42%-52% for position #1).

Based on you being position 6-8 and the traffic levels I'd figure you'd have about a 5-6% CTR, so your numbers don't seem far off.

Under position 3 on higher volume keywords your visits are pretty much crap. Position 3 and above should be the long term goals.

This seems to make sense, looks like i need to bump it up to the top. Even though I am not getting a lot of traffic the quality is very good, the traffic converts amazingly.

Thanks for the replies guys, good advise on here!
