    Hi all,

I've been apart of the BHW community for a little while now...mostly a lurker, but I used to post quite a bit in the CL section since that's what I strictly have done up until this point.

But, I feel like its finally time for me to expand my horizons and try something else besides CL marketing...the only problem is, I really don't know where to start.

I would like to make a website and can even provide my own legitimate content and articles (as well as anther person who is willing to write for me)...So I'm not looking to do something involving a lot of spam or fake blogs, but rather create a website and learn to market it optimally, with social media and PPC traffic.

My only question is...where do I start? I can make the site and all but the marketing end of things is very intimidating.

Should I bother with PPC? Isn't it expensive to do such type of advertising? How do I even break any ground with social media? Is this basically a pipe dream?

Sorry if this comes across as a noobish thread, but I'm looking for advice on how others basically got started in this very murky and mysterious world of people making money off their blogs/websites.

    Thanks,
    -4

How to do keyword research is probably where you would want to start, and then go for organic traffic from search engines. There are a lot of threads / guides on the site about keyword research from reputable members that you can learn from. After you pick your first "niche" I would recommend sticking with it and don't wander off into a bunch of ideas and get spread too thin. I would also recommend looking at material on basic "white-hat" SEO optimization techniques, unique well optimized content is always the best (as you seem to already know anyways)

Also, when it comes to automating things (like backlinking / pinging / bookmarking / making web2.0 satellite sites / submitting articles etc..) you are better off doing it manually for a bit before you jump into autmation so you have a good solid understanding of how it all works.

PPC is a whole different beast that I really don't mess with, but from what I have gleaned you can stand to lose your butt if you don't stay on top of it. Of course you can do small amounts at a time and test, test, test to see what works. I am sure there are guides on the forum about it but I have never really went in that direction.

Good luck and I hope you find your answers!

If you say you and your friend both are willing to generate content, organic traffic will come with the fresh posts.. Keyword searches = traffic = profit.

I may be willing to do a joint venture with you if you're interested - just shoot me a PM if you want to talk.

Leave the PPC alone to start with because that is a whole separate science. Very difficult to send PPC traffic to a blog and have it be profitable.

Build your nice blog with original content. Put up adsense and ads for products in your niche from clickbank and any other products you happen to find and think would go well with your site.

Set up a twitter account and get a WP plugin that posts to twitter every time you make a new post on your blog. Add followers in your niche using some twitter software.

Start putting up videos on youtube, either download and reupload or make new ones from image compilations. Link from youtube to your site.

Do social bookmarking for every article and submissions to quality directories, blog directories and RSS directories that will give you a hardlink.

If you have someone writing for you, do submissions to article directories to get some initial traffic flow and backlinks.

Make a facebook fan page and try to get fans to it. Put those social media "bookmark this page" javascript things on all your pages.

That should give you something to get started with.

OP: I feel your pain of being overwhelmed. There are a lot of awesome "how to" threads on this site to help. Look around at what interests you. In my opinion you'll make more money if you look at how you can "serve" people out there more than "how can I make money today", but I'm sure you'll find some that will disagree.

If you have some cash, don't feel like you need to do everything yourself. You can outsource a lot of the marketing part through a lot of good service threads on this site to eliminate the need to become a pro at every aspect of IM.

    Good luck!

I completely agree with this, the ventures that I have entered into that actually provide people with something they really want have always worked the best. The things I did in the beginning to just try and get people to click on dumb ads surrounded by BS keyworded content that was worthless always had poor returns.

Thanks a bunch for all the positive replies guys!

dichotom - will read those links ASAP...probably will read them a few times, hopefully they help.

Sounds to me like this is a long, and hard process, but if I actually stick to it I can make money at doing something I actually enjoy. I think I understand everything so far except for these 2 things:

When you say "do social bookmarking" do you mean just post your new blog links on reddit and digg? How do you not come across as being a spammer? What is an RSS directory?

Also, what do you mean by submitting articles? To what kind of sites? Arent these the sites that pay you for your articles and take your traffic? Or do I do a link back to my blog?

Sorry for all the questions...thanks a bunch for the help!!

best to learn keyword research, basic onpage SEO, leave the PPC aside for now, this is pure cash being thrown away if you don't know what you're doing.

read a few articles about good landing pages and design something according to.

then create your blog, do some SEO, add some content....

once you see your page is converting, PPC can be integrated. (feels funny to describe the whole IM concept in 3 lines).

    goodluck OP.

The earlier post about serving needs is dead on. People will pay a small amount of money for something to satisfy a basic need, but they will pay a crapload of money depending upon what need or wants is being satisfied. Ego, fame, security, safety, sex...pick your niche and go with it.

You should look into Maslow's Hierachy to get a basic understand of people and then go down your own keyword research, competitive analysis and use your strengths from CL postings.

    Regarding social bookmarking - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_bookmarking

As for not becoming a spammer, you'll learn over time what to do and what not to do. Keep reading around this site and you'll get a good feel for everything.

    Regarding RSS directories - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS and http://www.toprankblog.com/rss-blog-directories/

    Regarding article directories - http://www.bukisa.com/articles/384181_top-20-article-directories-for-seo-article-marketing and http://www.vretoolbar.com/articles/directories.php

I don't own or endorse any of the sites I've listed above. They'll just give you an idea of what those phrases mean. I was in your shoes not too long ago. BE CONSISTENT and DON'T QUIT and keep reading, reading, reading.

You'll soon find something that interests you to pursue (and I recommend you try to avoid being scatter brained and trying a little bit of everything - get focused and proficient at one thing before you move on) and be making $$ in no time.

    Good luck!
