Of course, search engine traffic is relevant. However, there are so many other ways to get traffic these days, even Pinterest and Facebook. And, Google is really fickle, constantly tweaking and updating search algorithms.

Everyday, I read stories online of webmasters who relied solely on search engine traffic, only to be devastated when a new algorithm hit.

I want to know if you ever had a situation where over reliance on search engine ranking actually led to disaster for your site, such as during Panda or Penguin updates. Has this happened to you? And, if so, how did you recover?

Depends what niche you are in, for most niches the other methods you mention are useless.
