So others can learn and maybe someone has an idea on what to do.

Here's a 4 year old site. PR 2. Haven't done much with the site and not important to my business, so I wanted to see, personally, the effects of aggressive link building.

    • Started using the new Link Aloha 2 aggressively on several (3-4) keywords in Nov (see the graphs)
    • Built tiered structures with their automated system
    • You can create tiers with 5-6 different link types (articles, tweets, web20, etc)
    • These 3-4 keywords get a total of 600k exact monthly searches in google
    • Site & homepage still indexed per command site:website.com.

Look like an anchor text or link velocity over optimization penalty?

I haven't stoppped the campaign, but broadened the scope of the keywords to 20 (from the original 3-4) with same number of links as before just spread across a broader swathe of keywords (and pointing at home and internal pages).
Here you can see the traffic/rank drop: (google analtyics google traffic & rank tracker reports)

Do you think this was a result of building links to aggressively or building the wrong type of links to aggressively?

I personally think it's the latter.

The best advice I can give is that whatever you did in regards to link building, don't stop. If you stop now, IMO that's the worst you can do! Keep at it, let's hope it will rebounce and Google's only testing your site and evaluating new backlinks velocity/volume/quality.

Well, I certainly would've preferred to build PR 3+ / quality links, but budgets and a lack thereof usually prohibit that and we work with what we've got or willing to spend.

The question isn't what I did wrong, but rather what can I do now to resolve the issue and will diluting the anchor text with the same type of links, but different anchor text get me out of this.

I didn't think you were actually looking for any answers as to why the site is being penalized as it's pretty obvious to me.

The site has got nothing but spam links pointing to it. Build some quality links to the site if you want to fix any issues you are having.

this problem could have occurred internally bacause of site structure or on-site or even content issues. You cannot blame this on spam links without examining the entire thing. Your problem may not be link related at all. Just saying.

Don't stop building links. That's a google strategy after they see you get tons of links the drop your rankings .If keep building links your get higher. Don't STOP what are you doing but don't get to many links from the same domains now it's the best time to build more links.

    Gary Becks -
I'm not sure you're following. It goes without saying they're crap links. I'm not disputing that.

So, you're saying it's impossible to get good rankings with a diverse population of low quality links to an "aged" domain with a low PR?

Furthermore, you're suggesting I stop what I'm doing and get quality links? So, you're saying low quality links cannot be used effectively to help pull the anchor text or velocity penalty?

    That is your suggestion?
