Most Tweets are ignored. A study by market research company Sysomos reveals that 71% of tweets fall into the abyss, receiving no response at all.

"When a tweet generates a reply (aka @) or a retweet (aka) RT, it suggests the tweet has resonated enough with someone that it sparks a conversation or encourages someone to share it with their followers," the company said on its Web site.

Over the past two months, the company studied 1.2 billion tweets to compile its data. People might retweet or reply because they find the particular tweet poignant, funny, or important.

But the study showed that only 6% of tweets are actually re-posted, meaning @replies comprise the remaining 21 percent.

The small delegation of tweets that are actually being re-posted are happening in the first hour at a rate of 92%. After that first hour, the replies drop off significantly, thus tweets that aren't reposted within that window of time probably won't ever get an RT.

For the tweets that get replies, the conversations don't last very long, Sysomos said. Of those, 85% have only one reply to the original post.

A little more than 10% received a response beyond the original reply, and only 1.5 percent of tweets went three levels deep.

They should have taken note that twitter is now spam central in the internet, and that is why its mostly ignored.

apart from getting late-breaking news or spidering new web pages, it's good for almost nothing.in another year or so it will probably go the way of myspace.

well if 41% of tweets are pointless babble like "in bed" "going to park" "taking a shit", then those figures would make a lot of sense

how much can one say in 140 characters anyway? the celebs are the ones who post idiotic crap every 10 minutes like, 'taking my dog for walk' - 'believe in yourself' - 'saw my cousin downtown'.

paris hilton, kim kardashian, alyssa milano, kirstie alley, tila tequila, miley cyrus, paula abdul...

I'm shocked by those numbers, I thought it would be higher. I personally ignore 99% of the tweets :)

I exclusively use tweets for indexing purposes, nothing more to it for me, cause almost everybody is using some type of script to tweet, so who's actually seeing it?

so what? Over 90% of all facebook updates don't even show up for your friends and fans.
And the rest is probably ignored pretty much as well....

I not really surprised about Twitter. A great deal of it is mindless garbage.

I am surprised about Facebook updates. What proof do you have to back that up? Just asking. I ignore most of my friends and family updates on my personal account. Too much noise and mostly nonsense away.
