Here were I am there are lots of unemployed writers who could write articles for very little (think 3$ for 300 words). Do you think it could be possible to buy a few of those, translate them in english and then publish them on the english market for money? I'm talking about some niche content like martial arts, or some computer guides. Could this work?

Depends on the standard of translation.
Why aren't you targeting your local market too?

As @Asif WILSON Khan said - it would all come down to the quality of translation.

While your local language content could be top-notch, it is extremely easy for it to get lost in translation.

If you're intending to use an automated translation service such as Google Translate or Babelfish - then you're in for a world of pain, as that content would be incomprehensible.

You can hire people to write in decent English for that price too , no need to hire someone non English speaking and then hire someone else to translate it

I'm quite confident that I could come up with a good translation. For technical articles it would be pretty easy (no language nuances).

The reason why writers are willing to work for very little is that there is no way for them to earn more, so the arbitrage margins would be very very thin.

    Poor, fair Italy.

Well, but in that case why aren't they selling their works for more? They must be really shitty writers.

    Edit: sorry, double post.

Maybe , but there are also a lot of desperate freelance writers out there , they also probs don't know where or how to sell their stuff directly compared to writing for clients
