I was wondering if anyone had some experience with this. Every once and awhile you will see an affiliate review site outranking the official site for the company or product name. For example, having your p90x review site ranking #1 when someone searches for p90x.

Can the companies do anything about this if you aren't using their trademark in your domain name? I assume the worst that would happen is they would remove you as an affiliate.. But then they are going to lose a lot of sales.

I doubt they will remove you as an affiliate if you are beating them.

If you aren't using their name as your domain or doing anything extremely dodgy they should be happy as they would be making a good profit :).

It all depends on the company and you're better off checking with them. Some companies don't care but some will ban you quick. For example a lot of the poker programs will ban you straight away if you optimize for their brand names and they'll even sue you to get the domains.

Companies don't like it because that's traffic that they were already getting, for free. If you take their spots in the serps then they have to split the revenue on the sales with you which means lower profits for them. Affiliate programs generally want you to be sending traffic from areas where they're not already getting traffic.

Generally speaking clickbank product owners would be happy if you out rank them as your increasing their profit. But as the above said, if you're like position 1 and their 2 then I don't blame them for banning as they are realistically splitting earnings with a complete stranger :p
