There's some keywords I'm looking to target and the top results are authority sites.
These sites are pure affiliate pages with no content at all. The root domain however has high metrics.
I also pulled up the back links of each and they have less than 10 links or have none at all.

Would it be worth it to pursue these keywords?

If they're affiliate sites, it's more than likely that they actually do have backlinks, you just can't see them because they're blocking crawlers like Ahrefs and Majestic. I would definitely pursue a keyword in which I was competing with other individual affiliates because if they can do it, why can't you?

Outranking authority sites like Walmart or Target is really difficult, but you should certainly try to outrank other affiliates if the reward is worth it.

Hmm, forgot about that. How about the thin content though? They actually have no content, just a list of products lol.

Also the websites ranked #2-10 don't contain the exact keyword in the title, only in the meta description. Would that mean ranking should be fairly easy or no?

They're probably ranking through good PBNs.

I had someone sent me through a keyword to look at for them and first thing I saw was top spot, DA1, PA1, zero backlinks.
Third on the list was Telegraph newspaper website...

Yes, the fact that they have thin content and that they don't use the money keyword in the title is a sign of weakness for them, but you can't expect to outrank them based on that fact alone - If they have an insanely powerful PBN it won't really matter. IMO you should go for it, you'll never truly get an answer until you try :)
