Outranking authority sites (many say it's possible, others say it's not) what is the correct answer?

Say I already have some good PBNs, know how to keyword research (some what) and have the tools to check competition backlinks using Ahref, and then SEMRush to check keyword difficulty and more.

Next I'm looking on Amazon and can dig out some products to promote, I go over to my keyword tool and it shows the top ten as high authority websites such as Amazon, Bestbuy and so on. According to lots of threads on here there's plenty that suggest if they are NOT optimising for your keyword (lets say niche review) via onpage SEO, anchor links, that you CAN outrank them in time with a bit of hard work.

But then there's lots of threads with posts from users suggesting its impossible, not to waste time, or some say you don't know until you try, or if you have good budgets you can outrank them easily. The problem is I can't seem to find a definitive answer for this.

I have spent the last week researching about keyword analyzing but I'm stuck on this, I want to start trying to rank up amazon affiliate review type websites but I'm worried since I don't want to invest time and money into something that is impossible.

I'd really appreciate someone that is already managing to do this to help me find an answer.

    Thanks
