I have been doing learning keyword research for the past couple of days and decide to target local domains.

    keyword + cityname

There are a couple of nice '700-1000 monthly local searches' keywords that i found but all EMD are taken except .org

I am wondering how much of a difference is

    .com vs .org or
    .ca vs .org (targeting Canada)

Is it still worth getting it? Most of these keywords are in health niche, so I believe the competition is quite high
But again, i m targeting local keywords, so yea.

    Please advise. Thanks

first off is the search volume exact or broad?
secondly if the competition is high and its that low of search volume I wouldnt waste time energy and money on it, unless you are doing some other type on monetizing? like if its a dentist office and you can sell ad space and make quick bucks like that then yes its worth it...if you are just doing adsense then no it is not. it really depends on your monetizing method?

    Thanks for your input.
Its EXACT local searches, dentist-type niche.
In regards to competition, i would say is fair, but i think it has wikipedia listed as top10 as well. However, their page backlinks arent that high - seems manageable to me.

I'm not quite sure why you ask for our opinion as eventually it's the value of your time we'd be estimating. If the CPC is high and it's a "selly" keyword, hell, go for it :) You can always just get one and see how it goes and afterwards try and expand. If they are dentist keywords, leads could also be worth quite a bit, so you could contact local dentists when you have the traffic and ask whether they'd be willing to cooperate

search in google for your keyword(s) and see if it triggers relevant ads. You can choose a different location to match the city on the left side of google. If there are 1-3 ads above the organic results, you have a winner. Build an adsense site using the CRT theme.

What you mean 1-3 ads above organic results?
Well, i dont know what you meant, but i do see the first 7 results are 'google places'.

He means the Adwords ads in the off colored box above the results. Like say you search "Toronto dentists", you get 3 ads, then a bunch of Google Places results, and THEN your search results. If there are no ads there, it's probably not a real moneymaker to start with.

For under 1000 in monthly search volume, judging just by what I know of the terms you're after, I'd say keep hunting for some better terms. Even if you do rank those domains, you've got a very low search volume, most of which are going to be lost to all that junk above you. Even if you take the #1 spot for search results. I use the term junk relatively also, they are very targeted and quality results generally for these type of searches. A lot of the search volume will be lost there.

My advice, look elsewhere unless you have a solid game plan for monetizing the traffic already laid out.

if its exact and you are trying to snap necks and cash checks from adsense only and the CPC is lower than $3 then it isnt worth the time. now if you are doing adsense and using the site to sell advertising space for local health professionals and you can sell them on it and generate leads then yes it would be worth it.

Search google with your keyword. Analyze other sites and check whether they have relevant ads. Also check allintitle:sitename and allinurl:sitename. They should be less than 50,000 ideally. Also org is a top level domain. So there shouldn't be a problem to rank in google if you do proper link building. Moreover take action. That will give you the valuable experience
