For the purpose of this post let's assume both exact match domains and partial match domains get some seo boost. Which is better for seo all other things being equal?

in theory all extensions are equal, M. Cutts is saying that.

I will go with the .com because people tend to prefer it and you might get more clicks from search results

It's all about trust. Folks seem to trust .com and .org more, so it's easier to get natural backlinks and social signals.

So if all domains are equal, then it's better to go with an emd that a partial match domain, right?

i would get the .org EMD if just ranking for keywords. If you are building your own brand then .com

I would go with the .com because of the higher level of trust associated with it in searchers eyes. Higher CTR in the serps, means more visitors for the same rankings.

Oh and it would be exact match if I was looking to create a branded quality site, and partial match if it would be a lower level of quality. The google crackdown on emd's is more along the lines of sites that are emd's with low quality content. So in my opinion, if your looking to build a quality site, then definitely go with the emd .com

It's a branded quality site and it's a doctors practice, so I don't think the .org would make people lose trust in the site and not click on it. I am just very concerned about ranking for the keywords, but it will have quality content. I have a .com with the same keywords I'm competing against.

sin tzu...I think you misunderstood--it's an emd .org versus a partial match .com

A domain's TLD plays such a tiny role in Google's ranking algorithm. The only time you should consider a domain tld is when you are going for branding.

UNLESS you are going for targeting a certain country only than you may want to select the country that you are targeting.

Okay yeah, you're right misunderstood. In that case I'd go with the emd .org. As long as you have quality content then you have nothing to worry about.
