So one of my competitors ranks #1 for a lot of my keywords. I rank #3 for most of them. I have an option to buy his domain.

Whats the best solution for me? Do I keep his domain and brand up and running or do I take it down and 301 redirect to my site?

Are they getting out of the business? Did they tell you why they are selling or want to get rid of a domain that is ranking #1? Is it a brand name or generic domain?

They are just going out of business.

My thoughts were that I should leave it alone and just edit the phone numbers and emails to direct to me.

Silly Question but if they are No1 in the niche why are they getting out of the business ?

Moving on to better things or getting sued to oblivion for poor business practice ?

Change the numbers and run 2 "brands" on the first page...

But dig deep and make sure there isn't any pending legal issues, etc like Duffers5000 mentioned.

Just because you are #1 in a niche doesn't mean you are successful. But yea I get what you are saying. They arent Internet marketers or anything. Its just a company in the same niche as mine.

yea the more i think about it.. Running two separate brands and websites will help me fill the first page of google better.

That is the best play. Someone might not like the look of one site then click on the next and decide to engage in business...consumers are weird like that. Dominate 2 of the top 3 spots is the way to go. Good luck man!

Yeah, just redirect phone numbers and emails, and run two brands. That is def the best play in IMO. A redirect on their page will probably knock their site down after a while and bring yours up a little. Better to just occupy both spots.

I can't think of a reason to 301. Why be #1 when with a little extra effort you can be #1 and #3.
