Is it okay to use my keyword on all my images along with another word or two explaining what the image is also about (such as "how to lose weight - cut calories")? Or will it over optimize my images and can be penalized by google?

Currently have an average of 0.5% Keyword density in all my articles and 2-3 images on each article which would increase the density to 1-1.5% which is enough for onpage seo but can it be over optimization since it's only in the alt text?

The issue is originality.

If you put names to the images, put them with a clear description and the name that represents what the image means.

well if you mean uniqueness, then that's not a problem 90% of my articles have at least 650 words so having 1-1.5% keyword density isn't that much.

Also I never give titles or descriptions to my images only alt text

Go for variations that contain the keyword

If your keyword is magic means use stuff like this

Heres some of my old magic beens
These magic means made me high
These magic means can cure aids

Alt text is fine but you want to use LSI keywords and not exact. Treat it off you are trying to get searched for additional KWs or variations of your actual target KWs

well that would make me have an average of only 0.5% main keyword density, is that ok though?

kinda hard for most of my keywords since they are already pretty long tail keywords :p

That's fine. Be sure to use the <strong> tag as well as <h1>, <h2>, etc tags. I know you are looking to build anv authority site and that will sit well over the long haul.

I believe <strong> is bold ? if so then yes I usually bold important parts when I want the audience to really focus on what I'm saying there and when I use my keyword in the article. However H1/H2 I never use in articles since I'm not sure when I should use them

H1 should be your titles, this is a very important tag

h2 should be section titles, also an important tag.

Well I'm using wordpress I guess my title automatically gets h1 tag?

regarding h2 I'm not sure when or where I should even use them know of any example?

Yes you want to put text in for your images. I would not use your main search terms for the images but rather use a broad term

exact in first image
LSI in others or what the pictures actually are, you know the real purpose for alt

It will depend on your theme but unless it was coded by a stupid person it should be ok. Just check the source code, it won't take you 10 seconds.
