How do online furniture retailers work?
I mean I see hundreds, and they all have massive product selection.
And some of the sites seem like they barely get any business.

I can't imagine all of them have massive warehouses with 5+ of each product stored in it.

Or do they have deals with the manufacturer/distributor, and it gets sent out for them once ordered?

    Anyone have any idea?

I guess some of them could be re-sellers (dropshippers).

Others could be keeping their own stock.

Check out alibaba, aliexpress, tradetang, dhgate...etc. if you looking to do drop shipping.

Discard that. Seems like they launched a program in 2008 but it failed.

They have a fulfilment centre most of the time or they just order direct from the manufacturer!

Most of them are dropshippers, most furniture manufatures will ship directly to the customers for you, shipping cost is usually included in the sales price, in the US shipping cost for a sofa depending on were its going can be btwn 150-300$ but furniture usually has large profit margins so it works out.

I know someone who sells furniture online and he is an Amazon affiliate. I guess that's how the process works - making a deal with the distributor and the item ordered is sent out for them. You pay for shipping too.

For a short while I had a furniture eCommerce store, selling bedroom sets. I contacted a wholesaler from their website to see if they drop-shipped, and they did. I signed up, built the site/added the products, and that's it. So whenever someone purchased and paid me, I would log into the wholesaler's site, place the order myself and have it shipped to my customer.

The profits are good, but the shipping can be expensive since (depending on the size of the item) they have to be shipped by freight/skids.
But every deal with other wholesaler's/manufacturers would be different.
