I'm using a one-page wordpress theme for my local business because they look great. I was wondering how they are in terms of SEO. Considering the nav menu links to the individual sections on the page I wasn't sure how it would be. I figure it would actually be a good thing, especially with local searches because the contact us address and google map embed is actually on the homepage.

    Thoughts or experiences?

Well.. on page seo involves interlinking of pages doesn't it? I don't think I have ever seen a one page wp site. Can you pm me a link?

If it has sufficiently long, important, and unique content for the locals on that single page, then Google should still be able to rank it. Try it, you'll know the 'right answer' :) in a few days...

    1. Do whatever onpage SEO to it, and
    2. Get some links from social networking sites (talk about the site, ask friends to promote it on FB etc.), get G+; ping the page, get good backlinks and it will definitely come up in the SE result pages.
    3. Do whatever else is required...

There is absolutely no hard and fast rule that you must have n number of pages in a site for it to become a huge SEO Star or a SEO dud...

Is one page bad for seo? Yes it is.

Is it bad for local SEO? Depends.

Google ranks sites on quailty of content now a days, so if you can look in the mirror and say that you have what google is looking for then, you answered your own question.

Harder to rank a one page site compared to multi page sites

I haven't seen too many sites (multipages including) beating the manta, yellowpages, yelp, sites.google, kijiji, etc. for local results too often anyway, so why not try this approach?

That's what those local classified sites do to all the local business sites... :(

Anyway, he will have to include some more pages by default (eg., Contact, About, etc. with the home-page imo, and that should work.). :)

No, they aren't bad for seo. The number of pages on a website doesn't determine how good or bad its seo is. It's all about the code (header keyword, page speed, title, meta description, etc) in it.

However, ranking 1 page websites is harder vs ranking a multiple page website.

But why not just build them in HTML / CSS ? Far better than having 12 tonnes of stuff to do in a CMS surely? Plus you can be a lot more focused.

May be, he wants to use/test one or many of the the various templates, advanced plugins, widgets, other resources that can be used freely with WP. And not everyone can build or maintain a good standalone HTML site.

They are not really 1 page sites. They look like 1 page but they all have page links so nothing has changed, they just scroll to the relevant point on the page. I see a lot of them in the insurance niche and in fact, two of them are ranking on page 1 so they are deffo not being penalised. I should know because both sites are above mine!

Like hmeister said, its not 1 page site and you should be doing good,
Just make sure you got quality contents and cover most of the on site seo suggestion which you can find by testing your site trough different online seo checking tools like,

It's a one page site now, but it will also be a blog in the future. It looks good and is easy to edit.

The more pages you have, the higher chance to rank multiple keywords, because you will have more pages indexed.

There are only 'so many' keywords you can rank per page afterall. So why not split them up into multiple pages?
