I personally think it has much more to do with then just the education system. Although the main story is based around a high school, I wouldn't really call it a film about a high school education system. It's got much more to it. Nevertheless I think it's a great movie and would recommend anyone to watch it. It can get quite emotional.

    What have you watched recently?

Thanks for the reco. It's now in my watch-list. :)
I generally watch classics of 80s and 90s. Recently, I watched Chariots of Fire. In my eyes it's an epic movie. Next in my watch list is Dead poet's society.

I watched Stephen Chow's "Journey to the West: Conquering the demons" last week at the cinema, really good, highly recommended if you like his action-comedy-cultural styleo. Will check out this Detachment movie, haven't heard of it.

@ brian: one of my 90's fav is Shaw Shank redemption :) so good

Yeah I watched this because I hadn't seen it ever before. I was just skimming through Imdb pages like a zombie and saw the cover for this movie. I had to watch it. It was so so.

Shawshank redemption is a cult and in my eyes one of the best movies till date. Fight Club is yet another master class.

Alright guys, the movie is definitely not as good as the likes of Shawshank Redemption but it is worth watching. :)

Have you seen the machinist? If you liked fight club, i think you'll like it too, a bit in the same vein.

when it comes to old school movies, i really like the marx brothers.,.

Sorry, just reading more of his quotes and they are so damn good!!

"I intend to live forever, or die trying. "

"A man's only as old as the woman he feels. "

"She got her looks from her father. He's a plastic surgeon."

"I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book. "

And of course probably one of his best:
"I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it. "

Hey, thanks for the movie suggestion. Downloading as we speak.

I last watched Revolutionary Road -- fantastic movie, where Di Caprio is entangled is this so-called corporate mess. He doesn't live his life to the fullest. Check it out... it's a slow movie but worth a watch. I also watched Truman Show. Loved the concept of the movie.

I'd also like to take this moment to talk about There Will Be Blood -- it's easily one of the best movie I have seen, and I have watched it at least 10 times (including The Prestige, Shawshank, Unusual suspects, etc.).

I've seen "There Will Be Blood" before but never really watched it properly. I saw it on the TV, it was playing in the background so I didn't really pay attention. I guess I will be watching it properly at one point, as it does look interesting.

I've watched some of the others mentioned in this thread, and will probably watch those that I haven't when I get some spare time. Lucky Number Slevin is another great film but it is completely different when compared to the likes of "Detachment".

Nothing can beat movies of 80-90... and years before that... Almost all movies of recent 10 years are crap. Is that because good moviemakers are gone, or just lost the interest to make a great movies, be it an action, drama or romance?

They don't make cult movies these days. There are numerous good movies, but when we start counting cult movies made in last decade, then we end up searching for hours without any luck. 80s and 90s was the golden era of Hollywood.

    recently? Gangster Squad

i almost thought that Hollywood forgot how to make good movies lately, this gangster flick is a fine example to the contrary
Sean Penn aka Mickey Cohen is frightening as hell :)

Gangster Squad looks real good. Will be watching that one soon.

Today I've watched another good film, "Jeff, Who Lives at Home". It's a simple film but a very good one IMO.

There have been many good movies in the recent years. It's just that the good ones don't always become well known.

Hollywood films of the 80's/90's have their own vibe to them, I love them, they bring back good old memories. I think, as society changes, the movie scene changes.
