Just wondering what people think is better, having one Macrosite on a broad niche or many Microsites on more specific topics?

I guess both have their pro/cons but overall, which would rank better in the longrun?

    Thanks!

Personally, I believe the macro site will end up bringing you more money than will say 10 micro sites.

You're spot on by saying that both have their pros/cons, but personally I would go with many "microsites" without thinking twice - for the simple reason that I don't want to keep all my eggs in one basket. Think about it - something happens to your "macrosite" (google ban, powerful competitors outranking you, etc.) and you're out of money. On the other hand if something similar happens with one of your 10 microsites, you've only lost 10% of your income.

MNS FTW, i believe Micro sites are far better than Macro sites.

Risk for both is Null, you can nearly never lose money in Micro niche or Macro niche sites for that matter. Unless your lazy and outsourced everything, ie about $100 for the site.

Even then shouldn't be hard to sell it on flippa anywayz.

When making micro sites, you dont make 10, many have hundreds, and i am sure the average is about 30 or so.

You can sell sites only making you a mere $1, i don't have time to get the stragglers up to pace, i put same time on all my sites, and the ones that give me less money get sold.

Can't do that with Macro sites.

Many of the Micro sites get organic traffic, ranking #1, in Keyword that get search several thousand times a month.

    That traffic gets you revenue.

Macro sites, mostly, are one niche. not enough money can be made with organic traffic so effort has to be put into getting more traffic into the site, via other methods.

Micro sites, have more than enough traffic coming from the search engines.

    For example:

Macro site with 100 pages, gets the 1k, organic traffic to the main page and the traffic then bounces around the site to the other pages.

100 Micro sites gets, 100 x 1k, organic traffic, more than enough, for the sites.

Micro sites are just so much easier and better :D

To each his own, depends on what you want to do. For me personally I like to start them all micro and when I SEE RESULTS in a particular niche I then invest more energy in to the site I see growing, I mean its the ultimate to have at lease One MAC site thats bringing in the Bread.

I think micro is better. I had a number of sites with a few thousand pages indexed each and somehow they attracted a hacker who hacked a few of the sites and in the end i lost almost all my income. They would be unlikely to be interested in my micro sites.

Having one Macro site is like putting all your eggs in one basket quite literally.

If shit goes down, your income does go down, it flat lines.

Thanks for all your comments, I appreciate them all. I'd probably do a bit of both since the thing I love about Macrosites is the instant authority to your new pages as opposed to the days if not weeks you must wait for your Microsites. But the talk about all the income in one basket is very valid too, especially how I'm trying to get these to rank long-term and so if one site goes down, I'm not gonna starve for a week.

    Thanks!

Don't have all your eggs in one basket. Micro sites are less profitable yes, but if your giant site loses its ranking for any reason you won't be making money for sometimes months.

I like going micro and then giving special attention to the more popular ones and building them into larger properties. I would suggest start with a group of smaller sites pick out your winners, focus some attention on them then rinse and repeat.

I know this topic is from 2010, but wanted to bump it :)

After the penguin I think microsites (topic relevant, niche sites) are the way to go!

Micro sites all the way, IF you do anything gray or blackhat. After all google is forcing it, since they have a totally non-transparent and seemingly arbitrary ban/demotion policy. So unless you are the whitest of the white, go with micro. Then you can try different link building/content building approaches on each and see what works.

And no footprints on each, no google stuff (tracking, webmaster) on any. Private whois, rename the plugins (I have not tried this one), vary the plugins, vary the theme, etc. etc. etc. Also no common adsense, probably use CPA.

Again, if you are gray to blackhat, no one big site.
