I don't really use google, I find it intrusive and crap.
ok...I did a search... let's say my keyword is "blue widget"... just as an example.
I go to google and type "why blue widget is so popular"... First answer is spot on... why blue widgets are popular... then the other 29 results (3 pages) show something like "what a widget is", "what a blue/green/yellow widget is", etc... all irrelavant as i already know what a widget is. All irrelevant results have 1 thing in common... they are big websites with lots of links and content.
is google really that stupid? or it just favours the results from big sites regardless of the value?

PS: my niche has barely any pinterest but on the third page, there was completely irrelavant google book.

The simple reason behind Google’s popularity is its user friendliness and innovative ideas, nothing more. This is why it is stuck with us... for a long time...

Well, maybe there weren't any other good and established (older than a few months) articles about that keyphrase?

Did you repeat the search on different engines and get better results?

Did you try a vpn to see if the results changed based on location?

No... to both questions.
I just did a search "why 'keyword' is so popular" and I got junk.

So, if I need to find something on google, I need 100 proxies and then compare the results to other search engines?

Try it, perhaps more people in your location are interested in what a blue widget is, not why it is so popular. Or as @Songhort has said, maybe you have just found a nice keyword to build an article around.

There were... but after those "big" websites.

This actually makes sense.
Google didn't answer my question but your answer has logic.

What I hate most is when google search results brings up the oldest posts that are irrelevant, out of date, and obsolete.

For example, if you search something like, "how to (fill in the blank) on facebook/youtube/ebay" half the results will be from 2012 or 2015 and obviously they are completely useless because fb, ebay, yt, platforms like these always change their policies, systems, and layouts like every year. So annoying.

I think it would be correct to compare the results for this query in other search engines.
It is possible that Google's results are better than others, or the same.

Again... so if I want to search for something simple I have to try bing, google, DDG, yandex, etc? Then compare results and run an analysis for a week to see who gave me the best answer... why?

You don't have to. Its personal preference about finding the results that you want or need. If your aim is to get as much information as possible, then yes, the more research you do the better.

If you only want to rank for that kw on Google, then seeing what your competition is on Bing will be useless.

OK... i did a test to see my page on google and bing (I'm optimising pages and to do so I need to see what ranks... I'm not a stupid to only rely on google as i want traffic from bing, yahoo, ddg as well). So for this I got a few pointers to make my pages rank better.

But the fact is that google throws a lot of irrelevant results from 'big' sites just because of their 'authority'. It's google's choice, it's their algo so we need to adapt or run.

Something else I have thought about is, did you do a search allintitle:why blue widget is so popular to see if there are actually any other results that would match?
