I used to market on FB about 4 or 5 years ago, but things have changed a lot since then and security is tighter. I started a huge page back in the day called "Keep FB Free" that you might remember, based around an implication that FB was planning to start charging a usage fee. That should tell you how long it's been since I've been exploiting FB.

When you make a page now, do you need to connect it to a website or some type of real business to make it last? All of the generic "Free Stuff" and "I Love Music" type of pages that come up in FB searches are attached to an external business or website. Is this the new standard?

I wouldn't say you "have" to connect it to a website or business in any way. A lot of pages have emerged linking to "funny pics" websites and these are slowly being removed from Facebook due to the sheer amount cropping up. I would recommend starting page around a niche, one that will last long, and already has a good fan base.

For example i was messing around looking at niches in "fashion" and noticed a company called Blackmilk crop up time and again. They make leggings and customized clothing for girls.
After some digging found they have a fan base who call themselves "Sharkies" so i instantly got to work, made some fan pages around this and within 5 days of simply posting up around 120-170 pics overall across 3 pages, showing girls wearing leggings and other clothes. Have amassed just short of 14k fans across 3 pages with no real work and simply leeching fans from other fashion pages.

Its that simple, and to automate you can can even use sites like hootesuite to schedule posts every day.
