...one of my emds for a local biz dropped to #6 after one of the recent google updates... the site ranking as #4: "A description for this result is not available because of this site's robots.txt ? learn more"

No preview, no inner pages are indexed because of the robots.txt which is disallowing all bots. Good lord.

This is not even a rant, just funny as hell :D

Perhaps the site changed recently? It took time for Google to re-rank sites.

I've done it several times. Changing robots.txt, meta robots tag, etc on a regular basis are just part of site maintenance.

Sometimes, I look at the 'Top 10' in Google and wonder if they've just randomised/shuffled the 'best' 100 results and locked the order for a while. So often now, you see page 1's that used to look like page 10 a couple of years ago.

I often wonder if Google will go that one extra step and just serve up a random selection of results from their pool each time you search, rendering traditional SEO almost redundant (except for maybe trying to have enough results in the pool to stand a chance of being found a reasonable % of the time.) I think the quality of results would be about the same as they are now; pretty crap most of the time.
