Hi guys, I never thought I'd be making a journey thread, and this is definitely NOT going to be a hyped up one with little results. I've been a lurker of these forums for a while now but have never done a lot of posting, just reading here.

I lost my job as an SEO about 3-4 weeks ago as the company found some websites that I had built for other businesses and were upset that it was "a conflict of interest". Was total BS, but a gift from God at the same time to get my ass into gear and start something big which I have been planning on for a while now. The SEO agency where I worked had a CEO with 20+ staff that works for him all day long for an hourly wage, and I have always known that I want to be that guy! Especially when the profit at his level is 3mil+ a year, sounds like a good life only for the go-getters!

I've been making $200 a week on CB for the last 8 months without doing any work since the start of what I set up. So having learnt a thing or two I know that I could spend time replicating the same process to get my passive income earnings up without having to deal with clients.. and then eventually down the track learn more on CB, network with other affiliates/vendors and make bigger money! HOWEVER I have decided to run an offline business doing SEO & Website Design, such a fierce game where every man, child and dog is selling these services to businesses.

Now I don't have time to cry, because I've got a limited amount of cash in the bank until things get rolling, and I'm sure as hell not going back to work for anyone else to make them money, so there is only one option and that is to make this happen!

So what I've got to get my business rolling:

    • a very sexy and professional business website
    • a portfolio of 10 very nice websites
    • business cards, agreements, invoices, etc (all branded well)
    • the knowledge to provide great service for local businesses

Basically all my collateral is ready to go, and it's time to get on a mission and make this happen. I am not going to stop until I close deals, and will be doing everything under the sun to get them. It's time to leave my self-esteem behind and prepare for some rejection and A LOT of learning which will make me a better person. Prepare to do the things people are not willing to do to get to where you need to go!

My offline methods to pull in clients, are mainly going to be website design to kick off with and then upsells to SEO. The reason for going off pitching websites is that I have a portfolio full of good work, and don't have any local business case studies for SEO, YET under my own business.

I'm 23 years old and have never walked into businesses before cold, off the bat or gone to networking meetings but I'm going to do it all and learn as I go. Let me say first of all, that I'm going to take a slightly different approach to selling websites to get attention and curiosity from business owners. You guys may like to try this too, or I will let you know how this goes and you can give it a crack if it works for me. Basically I have pre-built websites in specific industries, and will be going in and saying to business owners that I have built their business a new website, with a big smile on my face. Basically I'm expecting 3 different responses, either:

    • they like it, and would like to customize and re-brand it to suit their business
    • they like my work but would like to build a website with me from scratch and go through the design process
    • they beat me to the point of death with sticks & knives and I leave their building and onto the next one (just kidding)

Either way my idea is to take a different approach and engage the owner immediately by doing it like this. As opposed to the 20 phone calls they get per day from others offering websites. Maybe they will like what they see, as it is always different when you can see what you are buying as opposed to something that hasn't been done yet, maybe this will be a standing point and entry into working with the business.

Anyways onto the fun stuff, this is what I will be doing to pick up local clients:

    • Walking into 20 businesses per day, starting tomorrow and speaking with business owners to pitch them websites (bringing my laptop and showing them ones I have done in their industry).
    • Sending flyers via mail with dice in them (7878 method). Putting flyers on pinup boards too.
    • Going to every business networking group I can attend
    • Using the clients I get to pass on referrals
    • Some SMM (will let my GF take care of that)
    • Reaching out to people that I know that may be interested

...and a few other things. As my business brings in money, I will be spending profits on FB advertising and eventually Adwords. My main strategy is basically going in brute force to every business I can whether it be failing, winning or learning it's all of benefit.

Ok, to the juicy part, financial goals. The websites I sell are $3500+ ex .gst and SEO goes from $800 PM upwards, I like to take a higher price point as the work I provide is worth it, and I personally feel that running around selling websites for $500-$1000 screams the words "dog poop website" to a business owner. I would prefer to learn, and become a better salesman overtime, and sell at a better price point. So I figure if i go into 20 businesses per day 5-7 days per week, plus all of the other marketing that I'm doing. It will be hard not to sell atleast 1 website per week (well that's the way I see it, may be completely wrong), so if I am correct about that, it will put my income at $3500 per week and from there I can work on doubling that, and getting monthly recurring payments from SEO as I pick those clients up too.

So there is just over 2 months left of 2015, and I am going to take my offline business which makes $0, to 10k per month before the end of the year, and bigger achievements to hit next year will be to get to 30k per month, and starting employing staff and get an office.

I will let you know how I go with speaking to business owners, the conversions I have, how many rejections, how many wins and everything in between that can help motivate you too to get out there :) may even record myself going into businesses once I am 100% confident if anyone would like that too to see the responses I get! Hope I have structured this post well enough for you guys to read. I will be posting back here on a frequent basis to let you know how I am going and what financial targets I hit.

WISH ME LUCK, I'M GOING HAM!!!

We are in a similar situation. I'm trying to go full time by the end of the year and I'm shooting for $10k/mon by January from my offline biz. Good luck!

GL Op, great to see some recent journey threads around here looking to build solid businesses. I will be following this thread carefully, especially to see the results of your direct methods & to see what I can learn from them.
On another note, I'm from the UK & I have no idea what this means:

Thanks guys! I wasn't planning on it but i've done about 15 cold calls - landed a meeting with a guy that has an accountants business and is fine with $3500 - meeting Tuesday, will let you guys know how that goes.

By the way I got the meeting on the first cold call i've ever done Lol. Pretty happy with that! Basically called the guy up and told him I had built him a new website and to check out the address, and if he likes it we can go from there which he did and wallah.

Dame if I can get into the rhythm of 1 deal a week, that will be good $$$

I'm also giving this a crack with pre-built websites, sending a message like the one below through local business enquiry forms (as they always check these), and trying to engage them as quickly as possible. I quickly put this together and will work on it over time, doing 50 messages today and will let you know if I get any calls back. Also going to go down local PPC ads for the industries i'm targeting and messaging them to mention that if they are spending $$ on paid advertisement, they should have a website that converts like the one i'm offering.

Any suggestions to my message are welcomed :D My enquiry form message is below:

    Hello ____,

My names ____, I'm a local business owner located down at ____. The reason I'm getting in touch with you is I have just come across your renovation business's website and I have a renovations website myself which I have built, and I am offering it to your business to make you stand out.

You can view the website here: ____

We can customize/change anything on the website you like, and of course we would brand it around your business with your colors, images, content, pages, etc. To give you some quick insight it is a premium and custom built website, which is responsive on all devices and browsers, and comes equipped with all the bells and whistles.

I know for 100% fact that having a website like this will make you stand out infront of your competitors, and will also show people that land on your website that you are a premium renovations business, which will bring you more business through your website.

With that said, if you like this website and would to get in touch with me to arrange a time to meet up and discuss further, you can reach me on my personal number which is ____.

Alternatively, if you like this website and the work that I do, and would like to start a website design project off from scratch, that is also an option.

You can see my businesses portfolio here: ____

Get in touch with me on ____ to discuss further,

    Kind Regards, ____

Yeah $3500+, a customized wordpress website. But seriously, besides customization there are so many good themes out there that you can build without customizing anything. The websites that I sold previously before I got sacked from my job were $3500-$5000, didn't take me too long to build and my clients were stoked with them.

But i've done around 30-40 sites on WP so I can get them up quick and make them look good. A lot better compared to the average businesses website. I feel like when someone signs on with me they are getting a good deal :) especially as some of the agencies around where I live have vicious sales teams that sell $15,000 websites to small businesses and they look like S**T.

Good progress so far OP. I like the enquiry form message - to the point but not overly pushy.
What is your approach to cold calling & getting past receptionists to the decision-makers?

Thanks mate, I've tweaked it a bit.. Haven't heard anything back from anyone yet, maybe because it's a Friday.

To tell you the truth I thought that I wasn't going to do cold calling, but after spending 45 mins on the phone which MAY make me $3500, I'm quickly changing my mind on it.

The businesses which I called were all really small businesses where the owner answered (90% 1 man businesses). However I had receptionists answer a couple of my calls, and I basically say this:

Me: Hi it's Jezza calling from ___, can you put me through to ____. (If i've got the owners name)
    Receptionist: Ok, what's it about?
Me: It's in regards to the website I have built for ____.
    Receptionist: Ok 1 moment

Now that's basically from 2 calls i've had, so my experience with this is virtually nothing, but that worked for me. & I think that if your calling up mentioning your business name and what you offer, it sounds like a sales call which they get all day long and your not gonna make it through (that's what I'm guessing anyways).

& when they hear that you've already built a website for the business owner they are like ohhh ok. (Again this is only from 2 of the calls i've had, so not saying this is the way, but I think casual and stern is best )

its funny you say that, I dont know what they charged the company I work for but I related a funny story with the company I work for's website experience with outsourcing. In this game it seems like a good looking cover design and networking/selling your a$$ off is bout all you need, mix in some blackhat methods if you are lazy. One thing you might want to also offer beside basic seo is also handle social and press release blasts, simple outsource the writing to somebody you find that works good and cheap

Thanks mate, i've made a tidy little wage for a while now week on week without having done anything except my initial setup. Could duplicate it but I want to build an offline business first. Anyways from the small experience I've had, I would suggest to you being a vendor, recruiting affiliates and driving your own traffic :D

Alright, didn't close the first meeting as he has just started looking into a website and wants to figure out exactly what he wants. Said he will probably go with me, so we can say that may be a deal in the future, maybe not. EDIT: (probably because of my 100% rookie sales skills :D)

Anyways, just done about 30 calls to get 20 people on the line. Calling up small, local businesses, with crap websites or no website at all and have basically had a wicked response today!

    - 1 guy is cool with $3500 and wants to meet up tomorrow to basically get started (will give me a call tomorrow)
    - 1 guy asked if I do SEO too, now this was my first time selling it even though i've done it for ages so i feel like I could have done better, will email him information and followup to HOPEFULLY get my first SEO client
    - 2 guys called back and both of them hung up on me near the end of what I was saying
    - 9 more people are interested or would like more information so they passed on emails to send them a link to the website and some more info (have also added them to a list to follow up)

So all in all, 11 out of 20 calls went good which I will follow up with, and 2 of them I would consider pretty hot leads on the verge of signing. Everyone is quite polite except the occasional dick, so yeah cold-calling is not too bad. I've found this is working awesome for me right now, so anyone else feel free to give it a crack (for electrical, plumbing, renovation, etc industry):

Hey mate, my names ___ I'm a local business owner down at ___. I just came across your business online called ____ offering ____. (wait for them to agree and say yes politely because they think I want their services)

Basically I'm a web designer and i've built a ___ website specifically for your industry, and just having a look at your business online I thought it would suit your business really well. It's a very nice website, fully responsive on all devices and we can obviously change anything on the website you like if we were to go ahead with something like this.

Were you out at site, or did you happen to be near a computer to see the website?

YES -> Ok great, go from there blah blah
NO -> Not a worry, well hey if your interested, what's your email address, I will send you though the URL of the website along with some information and if you like the website get back in touch with me and we can go from there.

This seems to work well for me, my voice and personality, so you can too give it a crack or put it in your own words. Anyways off to local businesses to introduce myself and hand out cards, will let you guys know how everything unravels as I go.
