Hello, Ive decided to start offering different services to local business owners such as seo, google places, social marketing, web development, and others. Where I live right now is a mid-size city in my country, and although I have faith Im going to be able to do business here, I know that I could find many more opportunities and interested people in the bigger cities. Doing some research, both in my city and the bigger ones the competition is very minimal. The problem with working with the latter ones is the distance, as I wouldn't be able to meet face-to-face with these potential clients.
So my question is: do you think its possible to successfully get business owners as clients for these kind of services by only communicating through phone and internet? Or in your experience the meeting in person is too important here?
What Ive thinking is offering, for the google places package for example once they get in touch, the possibility of them paying weekly, after they see their google places page ranked (should be easy to do it fast in that particular service , as the competition is almost non-existent) to develop some trust first, as I think its pretty delusional for me to think I could get paid upfront and in a considerable amount by somebody who never met me in person.
Any thoughts or experiences to share about this subject would be greatly appreciated.

I am in the same situation. I'm going to build up some references in my own city, than expand to the next bigger city. its a 1 hour train ride which is not too bad so I'm going to do 1-2 full days of meetings there each week. after I built up clients in both of these cities I think my company will have a strong reputation to do business over the phone/internet and from referrals.

but in my opinion, no way around meeting clients in the beginning. I even had people interested in free websites wanting to meet me

Yeah, that's a good plan. I wish it was as practical for me too, because the nearest big city is about 8 hours from where I live. If I could gather around 10 interested business owners wanting a meeting (expecting a 20%-30% conversion), I guess I could just travel there and stay for the day (trying to arrange all the meetings at that hypothetical date). But I wouldn't be so sure about how to go from there in regards to the payments. Ask the money upfront for the month? upfront weekly? post-job monthly? post-job weekly?

It always wise to divide payment in milestones. You can ask for 25% upfront for 1 week, then after completion of half of thew work, you can ask for next 25% and then do next part of work i.e. 25% and ask for 25% payment again. In the last you can complete the task and then ask for final 25% payment.
