Received an email from GWT this morning, a notice of unnatural links detected. But it reads like they have detected outbound links on my site:

"Specifically, look for possibly artificial or unnatural links on your site pointing to other sites that could be intended to manipulate PageRank."

They may be referring to text links, which make a reasonable amount of revenue.

But this would explain why we haven't had any luck restoring our traffic or rankings no matter what we have tried.

Advice?

You really don't have a ton of options lol.

Either clean up the site and resubmit to Google for a reconsideration, or consider it a loss and start a new project.

i have never heard of anyone having this message...interesting...

I was just about to say the same thing about not having alot of options. I guess if it was me I would have to weigh the difference of what the text links are bringing in for me cash wise, as compared to the product your selling.

But with that said, This is the first time Ive ever heard of something like this from google. This seems ass backwards to me.

"ass backwards" that's funny...

so you have too many good pr flowing outbound links?...this is what this sounds like....

is this correct? do you have a link network running?

what kind of sites are you running? you don't have to tell us much, but at least tell us the truth and we would glad to help....

That's how Google should work..if they have problem with link they should penalise the source of link .. Not where that link goes to...if G ignores bad links( or penalise the origin of link) ..there won't be any negative seo

Looks like G is going in right direction

this is a very insightful comment...and i agree with this 100%...

we really might be onto something here and this might be the new roll out of penguin 2.0 right before our eyes...

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude!!!...what you just observed is BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

don't let that go to your head, but google just solved negative SEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we will see over the days ahead as if this is true, but man is this spot on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. So this would kill businesses like Textlinkads?
2. What happens when you legitimately link to a site that you like/is related to your niche, thus encouraging your visitors to learn more on the subject?
3. Couldn't webmaster's circumvent this by linking a banner instead of a text link?
4. There are many affiliate programs that allow clean URL linking after you verify your domain. Would these get affected too?

Not sure, these are all great questions and these will be answered in the coming days and or weeks if this is correct...and this is a big IF...big IF meaning penguin 2.0...

my observation is more based on the new GWT message then anything...so i could be horribly wrong, but we do know penguin 2.0 is coming so when do we first know its here...what will we recognize as the sign?....

I think you are supposed to ad no follow aren't you to comply with google guidelines if you are selling links.

This isn't a new warning. If Google suspects you're selling text links with a ******** attribute, they may devalue your site and PageRank and invariably effect your traffic.

This actually happened to seroundtable.com

Google are all out attacking my site:( Now I just checked and its gone from pagerank 4 to pagerank 0.

If we did this, google not leave from google black list...

Well that is not the perfect solution or they would have implemented it long ago. Say I build backlinks to your site using adult keywords but those back links are from millions of pages spread across hundreds of thousands of domains... Google can't just penalize all those domains. If they do, we won't be able to build good links from domains like squidoo, tumblr, weebly etc.

No it is not penguin 2.0 That message is not new. Just search it on Google and you will get results from year 2011 which means this message is old but now so much popular.
