Not ranking at all in G.com but ranking in G.co.uk (post penguin 2.1)

Before penguin 2.1 I was ranking about #5-6 for one keyword in g00gle.com. Since the update, that keyword has dropped out of sight, like -293 towards the bottom. However for the same keyword, I'm ranking in g00gle.co.uk around #40 (dancing a bit).

My question is... how? how is that even possible? I mean.. is the algo different for .com and UK g00gle? For the same website i still have some keywords in page 2 in g00gle.com so its not really been slapped hard overall.. just mainly for that keyword (which was my main keyword).

My other question is this. Is there any chance I can recover decent rankings for that keyword? I built quite a few web 2.0s for this keyword although it only represents about 3% of my anchor texts. Should I remove those links, or rather build more powerful links with that anchor text (like high PR homepage links?).

Any help or suggestion is much appreciated.

Where is your site hosted - in US or UK ?
Do you use Google Analytics on it ? If you do then G knows exactly which visitors browse your site and which ones don't (US ones vs UK visitors)

    US traffic is 54%
    UK traffic is 15%

UX stats are almost identical for both...

Those percentages will change now you're ranking in the UK.

I didn't see you reply about where your site is hosted? And is your content specific to the US market?

In my experience, the difference between .com and .co.uk is negligible when it comes to ranking on google.co.uk. Country-specific extensions are more relevant in the non-English-language markets.

hosted in US. Content is not more or less specific to US or UK, just a website targetting all kinds of international visitors from all over.

Well, the "refreshes" hit certain databases in different parts of the world before others, so the outcome can be one of two scenarios: Your ranking on .UK will drop, matching your US rank, or vice versa. Lets hope for the latter.
