This one is for the noobs who are looking for something doable and something that can earn them some quick cash especially if they live in an area with a good size population.

    Apologies:
For those who were waiting for the "Niche Hosting Plan" my apologies. I'll try to get it out next weekend.

    Disclaimer #1:
Unlike the membership site of my last posting I do not have any direct experience with this. I have not done what I am going to outline below.

    Disclaimer #2:
This is going to require you to get out there and actually speak to business owners. You can't hide behind an email, website, phone or business card. You have to walk into the business and speak to either the owner or the manager. If you can't speak to either then you're wasting your time reading this.

    Preface:
I've been consulting/coaching small business owners across the U.S. for more than 20 years. I have a pretty good idea of how they think and what they're willing to do. Meaning that it is highly likely that this will work for you if you will work it.

    Competition:
It's important to understand that your prospective client the small business owner is being contacted by a lot of different people all claiming to get them on the Internet. Some are offering ads on portals, others are selling "pretty but useless" aka "pretty useless" websites, others are claiming SEO which means nothing to most small business owners.

For most small business owners the Internet is a mysterious thing. They know they should be on it but they don't know how. I'm reminded of the show Cheers when Norm walked in the door he was asked, "How's life in the fast lane". He responded, "Don't know can't find the on ramp".

This is typical of your average small business owner. They simply don't understand the Internet. That's where you can beat all the competitors out there who are trying to sell these small business owners their expensive and "pretty useless" portals, web pages and websites.

    Potential Income:
Approximately $50 per hour and if you do it right then you can easily upsell them to $50/mo. Translation: Each small business owner can be worth $600 a year to you. Twenty could be as much as $12,000 extra a year. Plug in any number your ambition will motivate you to sell and multiply it by $600 and you'll have an idea of the Income Potential of this business.

    The Language of Profit:

Don't talk "Internet geek" to them. They don't care about SEO, keywords, html or anything else. Anyone who tells you otherwise has no real experience with working with small business owners.

When speaking to small business owners you have to speak their language. Speak to them about things they know. Things they're familiar with. Things they understand. Do this and you'll easily make a sale and they'll write you a check on the spot or take give you their credit card.

In this case, you're going to be speaking to them about something they know, understand and are familiar with. They understand the concept of Business Directory. They understand how important it is to be in a Business Directory. They're actively searching for new places to be listed. Translation: You don't have to sell them. They'll buy IF YOU DON'T TALK THEM OUT OF IT!

As a trial attorney in my area advertises, "You have the right to SHUT UP!" 8)

    What Your Selling:
You're selling a listing in your web Business Directory. Looks much like the standard Yellow Page type of directory. They can get their logo, address, phone, etc... listed in your directory.

    How Much to Charge:
The "trick" is not to be greedy. Stay under the radar. Make this a "no brainer" for them. Remember they're actively seeking what you're offering. Don't get greedy and make it hard to buy it from you.

Charge them $25. That's it. It doesn't matter that they might have paid more. There's always that possibility. They might pay as much as $100 depending upon where you live. HOWEVER, if you want less rejection and more checks then $25 is a "no brainer". They're thinking is, "It's only $25 I've wasted more money than that on other types of advertising. I can afford to take a chance at $25."

Realistically you should be able to get about three sales an hour. Not everyone will say yes but a majority of them will. You just have to have the courage to walk in and speak to them.

    What You'll Need:
    $10 Domain
    $ 5 Hosting
    $45 Business Directory Software
$35 Header & Footer of Your City
    $20 Local Advertising
    $ 1 Order form (20)

You may already have much of the above. You'll also need to know how to upload the software files, set up mysql database on your server, set up email on your website, have a Paypal account and know how to set up a payment plan. If you don't know find someone who can do this for you. My graphic designer is both quick and affordable.

    What to Do First:
    1) Purchase software. Don't be cheap and steal the software. If you can't afford $45 then having your own business isn't for you. Just buy it. **

    2) Purchase domain name with city name in it. Make it clear it's a business directory.

    3) Get hosting if you don't already have it.

    4) Install software and set up database and email address

    5) Insert header and footer graphics to customize site

    6) Print color copy of HOME page and insert into plastic protector sheet

    7) Go to printer and print a couple of BW copies of HOME page

    8) Write a nice letter to business owners explaining your offer and how it works. Provide them with your phone and address. Printed on letterhead you create for your business.

    9) Find a local classified ad paper and place an ad for your website as a directory for local businesses. Something along the lines:

    "Dallas Business Directory
    Quickly Find Area Businesses.
    DallasBusinessDirect.com"***

This is a critical step. You need to have your ad in this paper on a weekly basis. It helps to establish your credibility.

    10) It will take about a week before your ad appears in the paper. The next step is creating instant credibility for your business.

NOTE: Check with your local court house to see if you need a license to solicit business. Some areas do require this but most don't. Always better to be safe than sorry. Usually the license is about $10 to $50. They don't care what you sell as long as you pay them their fees.

**I can't list the software I would recommend because it's an affiliate link but if you're interested you'll find it in the free ebook link in my sigline below. Yes there are other software programs that may be cheaper or better. However, this report is predicated to be affordable for noobs to get into it quickly and make money. This is one of the better directory software programs.

***This is actually a live site of someone who has no idea what they're doing. If this is your competition then you're ready to make some real money with this.

    Gaining Instant Credibility:
The problem with many businesses like this is that they lack credibility. It's important to establish credibility for yourself and your business. Here's how you're going to do it.

By placing your ad in the local classified ads. Doesn't have to be in the entire area. Just the area you're going to be selling business listings to. Ask the publisher if they charge for a "Public Service" posting. Explain you're providing free directory for local area non profits and government agencies. Many of them won't charge you. Some will but it never hurts to ask.

Now don't make yourself a liar and not post free listings for local non profits and agencies. You want to get on the phone and start calling these non profits up and offering them a free listing. DO NOT simply place the listing. YOU MUST call them. This is the only way to get credibility. They're more than happy to accept any free advertising.

Have color copy of your HOME page in a sheet protector, a few BW copies of the HOME page, the paper where your ad appears and a listing of all the non profits and government listings you've listed.

The above will take about a week to prepare. You want as many local non profits and government agencies as you can get. The government agencies don't have to be called. You can simply list them. HOWEVER you MUST call the local non profits and get their permission to list. They'll give it to you. They're an easy sale.

    Why is this so important?

Because you never know if the small business owner you're speaking with is a sponsor of the non profit or not. If they are and they call them about the listing and the non profit doesn't know what he's talking about. You just lost credibility and he'll tell other small business owners and may call the police about possible fraud.

Providing a free listing to the non profits will give you immense credibility. It provides you what we call in the direct response circles as the "halo effect". No one wants to be the first to do anything. If you have local non profits listed then the small business owner feels more comfortable handing you a check for $25.

    How to Promote Your Service:

Ok, have you done everything? Ready to go and sell some listings? Make sure you've done everything I've outlined to this point. You've had a week to prepare.

First, don't make this more difficult than it really is. Forget for a moment that you're selling something. Forget that you're going to make money. Go to the business as if you were interested in purchasing something. Ask to speak to the business owner as if you had a question on one of their products. They will talk to you.

First ask to speak to the manager of the business. It is either an office manager if it's a service business or it's a store manager if it's a retail business. They're used to sales people coming in and trying to sell advertising. You're not the first and you won't be the last. They need your service more than you need to sell it.

When you speak to the manager/owner explain to them that you're new and a little nervous. Be honest with them. Explain that your boss has you going to local businesses offering online listings in the (Name of Directory). Ask them if they read the (Whatever paper you have an ad in). Let them know that your boss is actively promoting the directory in other medias. (use the term medias not papers).

Show them a copy of the HOME page in the plastic protector sheet, the listing of all the non profits who are already listed there. Explain to them that the listing is normally $50/mo but since they're a new business your boss is offering three months listing for only $25. At the end of three months someone will be calling to see if they would like to extend the listing at $50/mo. There's no obligation to continue. You just want an opportunity to prove how useful the listing can be to their business.

At this point, SHUT UP and hand them an order form. Let them fill out the order form and give you a check for $25.

The more nervous you are the better. They'll feel sorry for you and you'll have a higher conversion. Women especially will have higher conversions. Men don't try to macho it out. Be nervous!

Once you collect your order ask the manager if they know the manager next door? Yes, can I mention your name?

Then go next door, ".... mentioned that you might be interested in this..."

    Steal this Idea:
Look I know some of you are anxious to get this into a report or ebook format and sell on other forums. Let me make it easy for you. I'm all about you making money. So I've made it easy for you. I'll provide you with a formatted ebook with resell rights for FREE. Just look in my signature and download it. It's yours free. Sell it, make money and Go Crazy!

Yes, I know I could have made this into an ebook and sold it for $30 dollars or more. But it's better to give than to receive. Remember that when clicking on THANKS ====>

Thank you for an informative post. I will implement it with conjunction of the "free website" plan.

This can be done via telemarketing but you need to have your site setup or some content before someone will pay. They will also want to know what amount of traffic is being generated. Thanx for the share The hardest thing I think is getting initial traffic. What may help with credability is do a deal with a local charity and give them a small percent of sales to use their name and gives you cred. Thanx for the share

Telemarketing is fine for more professional people. However for noobs it's not a very good way to market this type of business. And, the conversion rate is not the greatest either.

Initial traffic is not really a concern. Yes, you should be advertising your site anywhere you can get it advertised for free. However, the more importat aspect of this is 1) You actually have a website 2) You place the listings on the site as promised 3) You previously called the non profits and have their listings.

You don't have to share your profits with a non profit. You're giving them a free listing and that's enough to receive the same desired effect. Your listing of the non profits and government agencies is enough. They won't know that the non profits didn't pay for their listings. They'll assume they did and if the non profits thought listing in your directory was a good idea then they will also.

You made good points for those who are more professional. I'm just trying to make this as easy as possible for a noob with little to no experience.

have had the blueprints for something similar for a very longtime but never got round to doing it...

now i was just thinking you could add a bit of a blackhat twist to it...

add a bunch of listings to fill up your directory - no one will want to be listed in an empty directory...

then contact the businesses tell them they have been added free of charge already for x months, if they would like to continue being listed after the free trial its $x/month...

if not they need not do anything and you will automatically remove their listing...

when the owner looks at the site with all the other business competitors on there they probably wont want to have their business listing removed... they may even want to be a featured listing...

i would also use paypal subscription as well for payments... otherwise you will be constantly trying to collect checks... which will become a pain in the ass!

That's funny, I just started to create this same project. I got the domain, the software, but that's as far as I got. I gotta get off my ass and put more effort into, I do think it's a winner.

    2 questions:

    1. Is this your ebook you have created or are you sharing it from another source?

    2. What about when you make a sale, who do you tell them to make the check out to? I mean if I'm offering them this sevice on behalf of my boss with company "x", wouldn't the check be made out to the company name? Is there alot involved in getting a company name for the checks to be made out to? I asked my mom and she said it costs like $200.

    Thanks for this.

I am better with clients than with tech skills. Interested in this and free website models. Would be interested in the best business directory script? - I bet there are a lot out there!

One question I do have is are you buying a database of local business info too? or when you install is it an empty directory. Will be hard to sell if the directory only has 1 or 2 businesses at first...

    Cheers

    :)

I do have the site and everything for like 2 years now.. but never really went out there... I don't know lol... what about if they ask a receipt? That's one of the issues... most businesses will need this so they can insert it into their accounts.

I think I've read this tutorial somewhere

But it's a very good one.

Now, what would be a very good directory software for this?

Read the ebook. Basically you're going to have to have an order form anyway. Give them a copy of the order form. That's their receipt.
