After writing a post or making a page for a long tail keyword, is better to send backlinks to the page of the keyword or to your domain to have that page rank higher? I know its noobish but I never actually wondered until now.

Your best bet is to build backlinks to your page AND the main domain. You want it to appear natural, so backlinks all around will give you the best results.

I agree but would add the following. Remember that pages rank in search engines. If you have a one page site, it doesn't matter much. But if you have multiple pages, then you want enough backlinks to the page to boost it to the top of the SERPS.

Many newb's make the mistake of linking to the index page with all their backlinks...that is, www.yoursite.com ...while its necessary to build links to your index page you will want to link to your internal pages....called "deep linking". In particular if you have a landing page or sales page that's inside your site.

As said above, send links to your entire site in a random way, you don't want 500 links to www.yoursite.com :)
