When doing Local SEO keyword analysis, if I was researching the keyword difficulty on "plumber" in Las Vegas, NV, would I do research on "plumber Las Vegas".
The reason I ask is because most people in Las Vegas would only search "plumber" and the top sites would come up on google, few people search "plumber Las Vegas".

Personally I still search stuff like "plumber Las Vegas". If you rank well for that, then technically you should rank in local search as well. It's worth targeting both though, as well as any other related keywords you can find. Don't focus on a few, you need lots

Yes users are lazy and most of them will just type a word and it is normal but if they can't find a plumber in their areas , they will search Las Vegas Plumber instead eventually.
The reason why you want to target local keywords, because a general keyword usually are very hard to rank. So by narrow it down, you will have better chance to rank higher.

    Randy,

I tend to agree with the other members. You should also think about the page you are using the phrase on. If your term can't be written naturally into the page, I would skip it for something more general.

You should also consider that after the Venice update, many users are shown local results more frequently. This is something that is hard to game. You can however make the data more accessible for search by adding local schema markup.

You can learn more about local business schema here,

    Best,

    Shawn

If I were searching for a plumber, I would search "plumber my town" Only a fool with no knowledge of the internet would just search "plumber". The same as if I were looking for a number, I am not going to search "taxi" and expect to get the taxi number for the local taxi office.

The most important thing is getting to know if the keyword generates a significant amount of queries every month to meet up with your expectation. If it doesn't have then you are in the wrong business.

You want to target the query with the city modifier. Even if it is not used in the search query, your IP address will (most likely) resolve to your town anyway.

This is actually wrong. Your location will have a certain share of the global keyword volume (without a geo modifier). In business, you do not have the luxury of picking keywords. With few exceptions, your main keyword will be "service/product location", or "location service/product" or "service/product in location. "

    This is wrong too.

If you sit down and search for plumbers, you will see a mix of local plumbers and general sites.. If enough people come to your page with the word "plumbers" and stay on your site, Google will start to raise your ranking for the word "plumbers." If enough people do this, it will rank you globally. I have a customer doing exactly this. (Number one in Google for multiple general industry related search terms.)

In addition to that, people do not search for what makes sense. Only logical people use logical search terms. 20% of all local searches are completely unique and have never been searched for before. Many local search terms defy logic completely. Even when logic plays in, you may think it obvious to search for "Atlanta plumber", someone else may think it is just as obvious to search for "plumber in Atlanta" "plumbers Atalanta", "plumbers in Atlanta", "pluming repairs Atalanta", "Atalanta plumbing contractors" and a thousand other things, including "north side Atlanta people who fix pipes" or something.
