Yes, you can still get indexed but it will help google spider the rest of your site better and other SE's too

have you just created a sitemap and are trying to check it?

use this site to generate one and then customize it to suit your needs

    Code:
    http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/

if you are using Wordpress get these two plugins:

    google-sitemap-generator
    Dagon Design Sitemap Generator

the first one generates XML sitemaps, which helps google, and other SE's, crawl/index your site. The second plugin generates an HTML sitemap page which you can use on your blog, this also helps both index your site but also adds an additional page (or more). I remember when I used to make BANS/phpbay sites, the sitemap.html page was the one that visitors landed on most often, so I believe it is important to have if ranking for keywords is a concern.

Yes you can. But I've always used sitemap even for a single post wordpress blog. Because it gets index faster.

Did you generate your sitemap manually? If so, then I suggest checking your syntax as it looks like you have an error. ukescuba linked you to a great tool that will build it for you if your CMS won't do it. Just put in your site, and it will follow all the links and spit out a perfect sitemap for you. Then, Google should recheck it and your error will go away.

I have used the Google-XML-sitemap plugin for Wordpress
    Works flawlessly

And to answer your previous question, yes it is a good practise to submit sitemap to google.
That usually results in quicker indexing and also give more authority to your site.
