    Hi all,

    VPS

    1. Suppose I buy a plan that has 1TB bandwidth/mo, 1 GB Ram, 40 GB of storage. Imagine I am a simpleton. Can you explain to me exactly how bandwidth, RAM, and storage affect a user's experience? (i love examples)

    2. Suppose I have 1000 wordpress websites that have an average of 5 pages, 75 photos (3mb each), and only 10 unique visitors a day for each website. Could the above package work? (based on your experience)

    :)

Unless you have a massively popular site or a huge file sharing site, I doubt you will hit the bandwidth limit. The more RAM you have, the smoother things will run - if you had 1000 plain vanilla wordpress blogs running I guess that would slow things down, once you start adding plugins etc you will be dragging the speed down even more making a poor experience for your visitors.

You say that you will only 75 photos @ 3mb each, but thats the not the only thing that will take space - log files, stats packages.

More importantly, select a decent provider. If they are cramming too many people on a host node it won't matter what specs you have for the VPS, its will run like a bag of nails anyway :)

    HTH

Excellent, thank you for the passionate explanation. What is a host node in your example and who are providers that have demonstrated this bad practice? (Google gave me shit).

The issue you'll be facing will be the MySQL server load mainly because of the RAM amount you have. There are some optimization to be made of course but within a 1 GB RAM allowance the optimization would be quite limited. Also 40 GB may not be enough to host 1000 wordpress websites. Also for 1000, you would be better by splitting it accross several VPS.

The Host node is the server which is holding all the VPS. The more VPS there are, the lesser performance you would get as there would be overlapped / oversold ressources.
To find the right web hosting provider, the best would be you to select an offer that pleases you and then check the reviews.

The above package simply won't work because,

1000 WP sites takes about 20MB storage for files and database = 20000MB/20GB
    5 pages x 1000 @ 5 KB/page = 25000KB/25MB
The photos will be usually cropped when you insert into a page as well as a thumbnail will be created so at the rate of 500KB/3 images in a page, it'll take about
    500x5x1000 = 2440MB/2.4GB
Now the original image @ 3MB/image will take about
    3*75*1000= 225MB/site or 219GB for 1000 sites.

The storage alone requires 241.5GB. Do you think you can fit it in a 40GB box?

You can run 20 Wordpress sites with just 1 GB RAM on an NGINX server, but it's too much complicated if you don't have a clue about server side programming.

    You said you love examples, so in layman term;

What you have is a truck with a payload of 20 Metric ton and your total payload is 1 Kilotons. Is it capable of carrying that much weight?

    Do the math yourself.

Food for thought : Since most of the storage is needed only for the images, you can offload them to an image sharing site like imgur with a plugin or if you want some privacy, you can store them on Amazon S3 which is much cheap but still you won't be able to run 1000 WP sites on a VPS with that config.

All very great tips, thank you very much. FBGuru, can you please explain to me how 1GB Ram plays an affect in hosting (example please)? I understand the 40GB is for storing files, and I understand 1TB/month dictates sent/received data for users.

Your VPS runs an operating system like ubuntu/centos and on top of that you'll run apache/nginx server,php5,mysql,phpmyadmin,etc.., Each of these services will eat up memory every time a request is made to the server. Its pretty basic stuff. You can find more info on Wikipedia/Google.

that amount of visitors isn't a strain whatsoever - though getting the VPS up and running might be. ha ha ;)

edit; though yes as others have said you'd need to actually make sure you have enough space for whatever it is you're hosting.

There are companies out there who sell dedicated servers for like £25 a month.

    Soyoustart.com

Part of OVH - a HUGE company based in france.

For like £25 a month you get a real dedicated server, 32gb of ram, 2x240gb SSD hard drives, i5 processor (i think?!?).

It's blank and you can put anything you want on there.

I don't understand paying £10 for a VPS a month when you can have that?

We use them, they are a superb company to deal with and I really do recommend them.

They have servers in Paris, Canada and the USA

For those stats you don't even need VPS. Just shared hosting would do.
VPS good if you are getting 1k visitors plus per day.

You can always have your host provider transfer your websites to your server.

With all those sites, I would recommend using an SSD as well.
