I have a site that I think has a penalty. It's an EMD and I built 20 do follow backlinks to it and it has been gone from SERP-s over a week now. Before building the backlinks it was ranking between 17-24 spots. I have done the rewrite from www. to non www. I know that search engines watch www and non www like two different sites. So how can I make my site not redirect from www to non www. I have a wordpress site. If I redirect the non www to www then the penalty stays I guess?

Thanks. If I permanently redirect the non-www to www, will the www address be affected by the penalty that the non-www address has? If I don't permanently redirect and let the wordpress 301 do it for me what will be the case then? Will G now look my www address as duplicate content?

A 301 redirect being a permanent one forwards everything. Positive link juice, rankings, negative juice, pageranke etc etc.

If you do a redirect on a penalized page, the rankings will be transferred first..and you will see a short lived effect of recovery and then the penalty as well.

If on the other hand you are certain that a page was hit you can move that page to a new destination while leaving the old one 404 which will break the link between the penalized links and your site.

In that case, how can I make wordpress to redirect my non-www to let's say yahoo.com and my www to work fine?

I think google is way too smart and disregards the www. subdomain when crediting links to your site.

Think of a blogger when he hyperlinks a site in his post. He is not aware whether the site has a www. redirect or not and this could result in billions of links crawled (and hence billions of dollars) by google ineffective.

I think you should focus on doing 404 on the pages themselves. Or if your homepage was hit hard you can do a 301 on to a new domain from all inner pages while leaving the homepage without 301. This will transfer all rankings and traffic.

Sorry if this is discouraging but I am pretty confident Google engineers made a special rule when it comes to link crediting for www and non www sites.

Okay, it's a MNS so I am not gonna bother with that, the homepage was the one I really wanted to rank for. It feels like I should not make any links at all anymore cause whenever I make links my sites just disappear.. for a long long time only to reappear in some crappy 100+ rank.

The anchor is all kind of random words and sometimes keyword, it's about 50% keyword, 50% some random word. The backlinks have been 20 blog comments, from do follow blogs with OBL under 5.
