Have a client I have done some work for. He paid me 50% upfront, and the other 50% on completion.

Work is now done, SEO work has had a positive impact, and now he isnt paying.

What is the best way to tackle this? My girlfriend suggests that because he's been unethical and not paid, I should be unethical and build bad links but I'm not too sure.

    Thoughts?

Try not to burn bridges if you don't have to. Do you have any contracts in place? What kind of run around is he giving you for not paying? Small claims is an option if the amount is substantial.

If he feels that the job is done and he is in the clear then he wont pay you. Let, him know about exciting new seo developments you have coming in the next few months and how as he is a valued customer will be getting even more major google improvements, how his business will get platinum listing in your new local directory, and exciting new seo work free of charge .. Never call a fight with a non paying client, unless you are certain there is no way you are getting paid

If you have a contract then take hin to court if not then give him a stern but modest warning that you will either remove links, if doesnt know much about SEO, or carry on to create negative links to discount the existing links and he will be back to square one if not worse because Google will recognise that they are artificial links brcause of how rapidly you will and have created/pinged them

Unfortunately this happens to everyone eventually. From now on always use redirects so you can switch them off and sell the position to his competition.

negatitive seo later on down the road. Wait 12-16 weeks...then he will come back to you and ask for help. Then you can charge him again

in the future get alll the money upfront

Hopefully, you set up a back door to his website. Just go in and take it down for now. If you didnt, if the amount is high enough, you can take him to small claims court.

Yeah, the biggest problem with revenge is it takes even more of your time. And who knows, maybe he can throw something back at you yet again?

If you've done some work for him, the chances are he will get increased benefit as time goes, meaning his rankings should still improve. When this happen, speak to him again and say you did some more work as a good faith gesture.

If he still wants to be a dick, then find out who his customers are. If you have proof (this bit is important so he doesn't sue you), let them know. Maybe use anonymous means. But don't spent much time on it.

If you wanna fuck his site, buy 5 fiverrs of XR spam to it using "buy viagra" AND his target words. Watch him wriggle out of that! Don't spend your own time, buy some fiverrs to make you smile again at his expense, but that's it.

If you still have access to his site, obviously just take it down or redirect to one of his competitors for the time being. At the very least, noindex the site.

I wouldn't negative SEO but that's purely an ethical matter - if you no longer have access to the site hosting or backend or domain, all that's left is deciding if you want to go to court over your contract (which I hope you have) otherwise cut the loss.

Yep that would be the question do you have a contract in place. Is he in the US or outside. If you have a contract then you could send out a collection letter and then go ahead and move to court.

If you don't have a contract then i would go back in and take down half the links and I would put up a simple site and redirect the links to that site.

So that way if he trys to do a charge back you can show that you did half the work. when he pays the other half you will finish by putting the links back

Contract = send certified letter giving him 7 days to pay or be sued -- > small claims court

No Contract = Send Email / Letter / Phone Call re: non payment ... learn from it.

An unethical reaction such as sabotaging his site leaves you wide open to reprisal. Think twice before taking any action. It might be an issue of managing his expectation from your work.

It sounds like the work he did was 100% Seo. My suggestion would be pretty simple, take him to small claims if its worth it or (based on how much of an Ass you want to be)
    1) Throw your hands up in the air and don't waste the effort (dgaf)
    2) Negative Seo bomb his website/business (if brick and mortar store, yelp)(he needs to eat a bag of dicks)
    3) Negative Seo his reputation, find those 'this guy scammed me sites) and have at it (rot in hell)
The last two are unethical and a shitty thing to do, but so is giving someone the finger by not paying for a job done.

The thing is that he's completely ignoring me now. He's from DP. The work I did was a one time campaign with no contract. He said he wouldn't pay 100% upfront (which I originally wanted) because he was worried about getting ripped off.

Turns out I was the one getting ripped off.

I was thinking about removable negative SEO... hit his site with negative SEO which once he comes to me about it and pays up, I willl remove.

You probably won't see any money since you made a deal on DP.

    Just get over it.

If you can't get over it, spam link his site all over the place, or click on his
Adsense ads with proxies from public proxy lists.

Put up a site with his exact domain then ad a word such as rippoff (customerdomainname-rippoff.com) and tell on the page that he is a business person who places orders and does not pay or what ever you like.

Do it like this, place all the needed content on the site that it takes for proper SEO but place the rippoff notice as a photo with the notice text in the photo so it will not be a factor in the serps, ranking etc.

Just make it short and reasonable sounding but use his real name. Place a footnote at the end that says he can contact you to resolve the issue.

Then go to work and make it outrank him or at least come up right under him in the serps.

Sooner or later he will contact you and ask you to take the site down after he see this. Actually I would put the site online and then email him right away and tell him he can watch as this site climbs the SEO rankings and comes up right with his site or even out ranks him, this may get him to pay you right then.

When he does contact you, send him an invoice for the entire amount he was supposed to pay you. If the original amount was 500 and you got paid 250 and he still owed you 250 then make him pay 500. He will scream and whine. When he does just tell him that if he would have paid your bill in full you would not have had to do all the extra work to get his attention and now he must pay for the work you did for him and the extra work you did to get his attention.

If you are doing seo for him then you should know what his IP address is or IP address range so you should be able to tell if he is visiting this site. After you are sure he is visiting the rippoff site you put up contact him again, and tell him this is the 1st phase and you will soon start nagative SEO such as porn links etc if he continues to ignore you.

Tell him his site rankings will plummit soon after the nagative SEO starts and that will be hard to reverse. Show him a google link farm notice that was posted some where online about spam links pointing to a web site and how google will consider his site a spam site and tank his SEO and after all the spam link there will be nothing you can do to recall them.

If he hired you to do SEO that means he probably does not know shit about it himself and he will believe this kind of shit specially if you include link to a bunch of articles about it all over the web, even on DP.

Trust me, after you get a web site ranking right with him or even out ranking him and using his exact domain with the rippoff extension he will come around.

The reason this dirtbag is not paying you is he thinks there is nothing you can do to him. After he figures out you can have his ass for this using your skills he will be back begging (and paying) for you to take the ripoff site down.

Document all of this on DP later if you want and use it as a warning to other dumbass people about what can happen if they skip out on payments. If you do this you will become a DP legend as there will be shitloads of people talking about this and your skillz, and balls in dealing with asshats like this.
