Of course they are good. They don't pass as much link juice, but I've ranked a site with only nofollow links. It can be done. However, for some nice healthy diversity, it's always good to have some nofollow links in the mix. If I can get some good nofollow link for free, then bring it on!
As everyone stated the Nofollow links wont help in SEO but still they are much needed for your site growth. Nofollow links are usually used to diversify the anchor ratio. Also if you get a nofollow link from a huge brand then its as equal to some ******** links too.
Nofollow links are helpful to the diversification mix and driving the traffic to the websites. If you can possible to get the no-follow links from the top authority news magazines then sure to get it, that will sure to help your website.

No follow links decides the quality of a site. This is how because if your site has no follow links which mean your site instruct the Google bot not to crawl. This helps to reduce the spamdexing issue by the Google Bot. Then the result of your site is good in SERP.
I do rank using Nofollow links as well. Agreed with @SEO Pearl and @Nargil as its good to do the diversification. In one word from my experience every links count if its not from useless or spam sources.
I don't know shit about SEO guys, but when I get a link from Wikipedia to a new website, all inner pages start magically ranking. So I guess nofollow links work.
Nofollow Link is a link that does not affect the ranking meaning it doesn't give a count to your page, but it's effective in link diversity cause Google Search Engine likes to see a combination of follow and nofollow links.
