Hi guys, so I recently made a website and it was indexed by google. Only problem is, that the main page that was indexed didn't get the "www" in front of the website name. For example "google" opposed to "www . google".

Its just annoying because all of the other pages got the "www". Is there any way to fix it? I'm also concerned because if Google re indexes the website with the "www", will all the backlinks I built be lost?

    Thanks for your help.

    yeah, you are screwed!!!

Just kidding. Ask yourself this... Do you think google is smart enough to know the difference between www.google.com and google.com?

You can specify a canonical URL in webmaster tools so it knows how to display it. If you're using wordpress, there are plenty of plugins available that will redirect non www to www and visa versa.

If you are using Wordpress you can go to admin panel general settings and change the Wordpress address url and site address to include the www.

    Three things you should do.

1: Set the canonical URL in your HTML's header:
    HTML:
    <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.mysite.com/" />
This goes in the <head></head> section of your site.

2: Redirect your site to www using .htaccess:
    Code:
    # Redirect to www
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^mysite\.com$ [NC]
    RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.mysite.com/$1 [R=301,L]
File named ".htaccess" goes in your root directory.

3: Set your preferred address in Google Webmaster Tools:
    a. Login at http://www.google.com/webmasters/
    b. Click on your site in the site list.
    c. Go to "Site configuration" on the left.
    d. Choose "Settings."
    e. Set your preferred domain display URL as the www version.

    Thanks for all the replies!

I got a wordpress plugin to make it redirect to the www address.

I also went to webmaster tools to change the preferred domain display.

    Hopefully it works!

I was i the same situation with new site , i did redirection in webmaster tools and with .htaccess

but the site was still without www in G during 1week

I was thinking about reconsideration request but today the site was refresh and come up with www .

so if it's not already done : webmaster tools and with .htaccess

and wait google to crawl , it can be long for new site :(
