Is it just me or do IMers in general receive a lack of respect for their job? Maybe it is in indirect ways but nonetheless it is their. For instance, I work a full time job Mon-Fri 9-5 and when I come home I usually spend another 5 hours a night, and 10 hours or so each weekend day, doing my marketing. However, no one seems to notice that this is more than a FULL TIME SECOND JOB. I make decent money at my regular 9-5 and then come home and try to earn more, although it is hard with everyone making demands of you as if you only have 1 job. I want to improve my life, my girlfriends life, my family's life, yet none of those people seem to realize that I pour more of myself into this IM thing than anything else. They do not realize that Im exhausted even though I have "weekends off" They do not realize that I wake up at 4am in order to get the days posts in before most of the world, they think I just wake up early because I want too.... seriously. They do not see the progress I have made from my 1st month IMing years ago and the insane amount of work and time it took to make $0 dollars, and how far it has progressed (not anything crazy but just about the same as my 9-5 income). Everyone sees my hardware and software as "toys" when in reality they are "tools" sure their are nicer than most peoples, but its because we USE them. They are how I make money. Would you expect to have the same hardware a mechanic has? And, this is where the indirect disrespect or IMing comes in, when I get my checks every month no one seems to remember where they came from. They dont put it together that my working on the computer results in those checks we get every month. People object to they way I spend the money, like I have been doing sooo bad Im going to lose it all. Its like money magically appears every month and no one is working for it yet here I am... after another day of the 9-5 back at it and setting my alarm for 4AM. BAHHHH!!!!

Im sorry all I had to see if anyone else goes through this... Im sure I could have expressed myself better but I had to vent and get it out to see if Im the only one.
    Thanks All!

hey pal, good to see that at least you are not giving up.
That seems to be the case with everyone. People think that what we do online is not "real" and just a game. That is until you start making real money.
But dont worry about respect. Once you quit your 9-5 and start making a lot with IM , help your family and your girlfriend then you will get your reward. Cool thing that will happen then is that because your family and friends have no idea what you do , they start thinking as if you are some sort of "genius" . Like i know that from experience. Even though what i do is not all that complicated , all i have to do is say that i make money online and they think i am Bill Gates or something.

IM world can be very lonely, because most of those people who are around you will never understand you or your problems. Thats why its great to part of communities like this place here:)

My dad does the same thing, goes to a full time job comes home and sites on hes computer tell 12PM then goes to bed, repeat. The weekends he is iether on the computer or doing work around the house. I have always respected my dad but I started to respect him a lot more when I got in to the businesses. So I haven't experienced what your going through but I have and idea.

Just don't give, its how IM works you work for months, years making nothig then one day it snaps and you don't even know what to do with all the money(or so I have been told.)

    I know what you mean.

I have a part time job outside the house, but I have a 3 year old. My husband is out of town 1-2 weeks a month with his job also. My mom is supposed to watch my son for me FULL TIME but every week it seems like something comes up. I have fridays off and something always happens and she can't watch him.

Or, if she does watch him she calls me 15 times, asks me to do things for her online "since you're on the computer anyway" she says.

Then on the weekends, I have to literally shut the door to my office and lock it to keep toddler and husband OUT so I can accomplish something.

I often feel like everyone doesn't take what I'm trying to do seriously...And it sucks to feel that way.

I just push through it and yes, I do wonder what they will say when I start bringing in the serious money. Other than "can I have some money"

Sometimes I wonder who needs enemies with family like this...just kidding.

Most people don't understand IM. They think you're just having a great time and cannot imagine how much work is involved to obtain what you earn.

Exactly the same reactions from my family and friends...

I also get it from everyone, friends, family etc, is a pain in the ass. Just have some money to show for it and they respect you a bit more usually. They end up loathing you for earning 10X as much as them when they work their asses off lol.

Negative people are a pain in the ass when you are working towards a goal. Nobody wants to spend hour after hour in front of the PC doing repetitive and often complex tasks but we have a dream to follow don't we?

And dreams don't just come true by magic as a rule so we try to make them happen, instead of wishing for them. We have to make many sacrifices to achieve them and many of us will fail unfortunately, but at least we tried.

That's what makes us different from other folk.

this is a classic problem... the average person sees the computer as a device of entertainment/information. When they see you on i for hours on end they ignorantly jump to the conclusion that you are playing counterstrike 5 hours a night, or hanging out on facebook because thats what they associate computers with.

Its really disheartening sometimes but just look at it as a challenge of the job, my girlfriend and my dad are the same. I have had some hard times from both, in fact my relationship with my gf is hanging by a thread because she thinks i am selfish, but i am trying to build a reasonable future for us.

I guess untill real money begins to roll in people will always be on your back doubting you, when you do make it you have every right to say 'i told you so'

I dealt with this for a couple of years. It was only when I needed to borrow some bail money from my dad so I showed him my monthly earnings that I started to get respect. People simply don't understand that it is real work for real money until you show them.

LOL, really see a common thread here. So far everyone says that we have had the same problem. Hot niche ah? Someone should write an ebook for this desperate market and solve this problem :D

This is a very common theme and I feel for you all. From my own perspective I had to deal with that for at least two years, BUT, the first time I started to make some decent cash my wife was VERY interested and supportive. Now, she just leaves me to it, she has a fair idea of what I'm trying to achieve and since my son got involved she hears the conversations between us and sometimes makes decent contributions.

All I can say is chin up guys, it won't be like this for ever.

Well if they knew what you knew and could do what you can do, there is a strong possibility they would be a member of this forum. Now if you consider the active population of this forum in contrast with the world's population, you're pretty damn rare. Fuck 'em. If someone thinks you're just fucking around socializing on social networking websites, I'd love to see them explain how to make money with their personal account and friends list.

    Keep hustling.

It's hard for people to respect what they don't understand. If you were fulltime IM you would get more respect (plus the nagging question "how can I do it?" constantly). I quit looking for validation about the same time I went full time. Realize if everyone understood it then everyone could do it, and there would not be as much honey in the pot for us.

I think you mention something most IMers go through when they have families that depend on them. Just remember that IMing as an occupation is still in its infancy compared to your steroetypical 9-5 job. It may take another 25 years before society recognizes internet marketing a really cool job like they do when you mention airline pilot or doctor, lawyer, etc. Just remember that respect is something you get for who you are and not what you do. I have a ton of respect for the guy who cleans up around my office area but I have zero respect for the blow hard head case that is my boss' boss!
