It makes sense since it will have a decent amount of duplicate content however will the link juice pass from the homepage into the categories and then into the posts? if not then no point in no indexing categories on authority sites

You wont have much duplicate content if you use custom excerpts. To make it even more unique, edit the template to include the category description at the top and write a short article about that category. Some themes already have this built in. I personally leave mine indexed.

I index categories and for every category I have a 700 - 1000 word article if you go to that category in addition to the links to the articles/pages in those categories.

I think it is a waste of a page(s) (category page(s)) if you do not take advantage of that being a part of your overall site presence on the internet.

I use categories on one of my large authority sites (totally whitehat) and i don't see any issues although i am starting to question whether categories are even relevant in today's web. We have moved away from the 'newspaper' inspired categories on sites to a more flat streamlined reading experience for users.

A site as large as wikipedia doesn't even use categories. It's virtually inter-linked by post name across the board - so you have to really question what relevancy categories even hold today.

its not exactly the question you asked but yeh... lol

    This.

On one of my sites, a particular category page is what I've ranked for a broad keyword, and this category page accounts for a large proportion of visits. I've taken the time to on-page SEO optimise this page (and a little off-page); I have a category description, image, custom excerpts, and it's like a page itself. The people who land on this category page are high retention, and view a lot more pages than people who just land on a particular post.

    I'd say leave it indexed.

Imagine taking up 20% of the real estate on Google's first page with the same site because you have a "regular" page ranking and your category page ranks as well?

That happens all the time with my sites.

Google shows 10 sites on a page and I can get 2 many of the times for the same KW... think that helps get targeted traffic?

Bluehatface (crazy name) is spot on!

It depends. I have configured one site's category and tag pages to be nofollow, simply because the excerpts are left to default and I haven't modified those pages at all. However I have another site that has a lot of additional content on the category pages, so I leave them as is.

Any suggestions on how to make the categories show a custom excert from my posts? At the moment they are just showing the first sentence of each post. And I'll add a 200-400 article to each category to help prevent the duplicate content issue.

Also how to make a article show? I'm using WP Categories not pages so I can add a description but I'm not sure how to make the description show up on the actual category when u go in the link.

Also anyone knows a plugin that auto posts your new posts to the websites facebook page?

Google has repeatedly said that it is generally able to filter out duplicate content caused by category and author pages.

    The caveat is that "generally".

In most cases on a new site no indexing the category and authors pages is a best practice, not causing a potential problem to develop in the first place.

That being said, category pages often rank because there is a lot of related content on the page.

    Here is my process.

For local businesses, I noindex them, I use a services page for that.

For IM sites I do not.

If the category page starts to rank, I take that as a hint that my actual content pages do not have enough relevance. It may pay off to combine two or more pages for a stronger ranking.

Once a category page, or any page, starts ranking in the top three, I do not f*** with it.

As for custom excerpt on a post click the show option button right at top of page. see image.

    show.jpg

Make sure excerpt is ticked. It will then appear below the post section.

As for custom description on category pages:

    Go to your wp dashboard
    then appearance
    then editor
then find the category page code on the right hand side (could be archives, could be category) depends on theme.

Then you need to insert this code above the posts section: <?php echo category_description(); ?>

Remember backup before you do this. Important. Especially if you are new to this sort of thing.
